Gun range sued over ladies day.
« on: August 23, 2012, 10:17:58 AM »
range sued over "ladies day"    http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/334...-Day-promotion

A Maryland gun range is being sued for offering women free admission on Mondays.
The man who is suing says it isn't fair to men.
The Maryland Small Arms Range in Upper Marlboro is popular with lots of folks. Even Lt. Governor Anthony Brown has been there with his son.
Monday has long-been Ladies Day at the range, but now the range is being sued over it.
The issue is, is it wrong if he had to pay more to be there on Mondays than she did?
"Just because I'm a man doesn't mean I should have to pay more," said Derrick Hunter.
Hunter filed a lawsuit for $200,000 with his attorney, Jimmy Bell. Hunter is a special police officer, and last October he went to the range on Ladies Day to practice shooting.
"They told him he had to pay $15, he said, fine, he paid the money," said Bell.
"Two ladies came up behind me. He told them they were free. So I asked him, I said why did I have to pay to use the range and they didn't," said Hunter.
"He said, because they're women, and you don't fit the criteria," said Bell.
Hunter complained to the Prince George's Human Relations commission, who agreed the range was breaking the law.
"He's opened up a bag of worms with this decision," said gun range President Carl Roy.
Roy says if what he's doing is illegal, then so are discounts for seniors, children, and the military.
"I don't see anything discriminatory about it. It's a promotion that we run, just as any other business is entitled to run a promotion," said Roy.
First-time range user Nautical Brown says Ladies Day makes her more likely to come back.
"Especially if I can get in for free, of course yeah," she said.
Some guys are fine with that.
"Guys are going to pay to go where the ladies are, so if they get in for free, that's going to influence us to come out," said another gun range user, Tim Goode.
"If they made him pay more money because he was black, would you still have that way of looking at it," said Bell.

I am no lawyer, but I am going to guess that this is not going to be held as sex discrimination based on the fact that he is being charged the normal rate to shoot, not an inflated rate based on his sex.  If this guy had filed a lawsuit seeking $1 in damages, I could at least respect his feelings on the matter, but asking for $200,000.00 is just another example of someone with their hand out, and a "make a fast buck"  attitude..

"special police officer"..probably means a "rent-a-cop"  security guy.

He's a crybaby opportunist. looking to get some easy money.  He's probably hoping they will settle for $50K or so..

I totally agree!  Not with him suing for tons of cash but the idea of equality etc.   I'm sick of special this and that for special groups.  What makes women so special that they get in free??  Things have been more than equaled since the 70's.  Any specials to ethnic groups, races, religious organizations or gender is a pile of .....well, you know.
About the only thing I can understand about letting someone in to a range for a reduced rate or free might be kids that are learning to hunt or learning gun safety.  They are our future when it comes to our future gun rights.

This is supposed to be the United States of America, where one can "be all they can be", not get in for free!  Unfortunately, no one thinks that way anymore, especially when it comes to our boarders and immigration rights....but that's another story.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now.    ;)

For those younger , to young to remember the attacks on hunters and shooters from the anties it might shock you to learn that back in the day ladies did not hunt and shoot as much as they do today. Many in the effort to defend gun rights and hunting figured if we could get ladies involved more it would help our cause which no doubt it has. So it is still working .
Now for those cry babies what have you done to help the cause ? Next time there is an election and the ladies vote on our side consider it money well spent ! Hey just consider you got in to shoot for half price and paid for some nice lady to shoot also.
Are ya'll really that big of tight wads ?

While I understand how blackhawker feels about the situation, I doubt it is a matter of the Range owner(s) feeling obligated for politically correct reasons to give the ladies a break.  More likely the owner felt that if he could attract more women to the range..that would bring in more men & kids..sort of a family deal.  Just makes good business sense...
While the guy has a legitimaty technical complaint, I don't like the idea of the guy pouting over such a petty thing.  If he doesn't like the way the range operates, make known his gripe and if necessary and if he's still unhappy..don't patronize them.

My comments were not about being a tite-wad or anything else for which I'm now being accused.

How about "Ladies Night" at bars??  Are we trying to invite ladies to become drunks??  NOPE!  On the contrary, really, it's all about capitalizing on stupid guys that are trying to pick up on drunk women.  Let em in for free or give em half priced drinks so guys can hit up on em.  It's good for business.

If you think this is about families, think again.  They would have "family day" if that was the case.  I can see getting women involved with shooting etc, sure.  If you want that, then have an NRA womens' shooting lessons day.  I would bet, however, the main motive here might have had something to do with some hard up guys that want to let women in so they could meet women with the same interest or just women with guns.  "OOOH, Women with guns are HOT!!"...or some crap like that.  Letting women in at a discount so you can get your rocks off is just as discriminating or degrading to women as not letting them in at all.

I don't know what the main motive is/was for this range nor do I really care.  The point I was trying to make was really about special privelages for people that don't really need them.  If it were a handicapped day or disabled veterens day, I'd be all for it as these people have special needs and might require special benches etc, not to mention what such veterans have sacrificed for all.  I'm just sick of special rates or discounts for this or that when it's for no real cause.  If you want to play, then pay.  I'm tired of free rides.  Either everyone gets in free or everyone pays.  That's really my point here.

The range here has senior discounts and kids discount also along with ladies night. Being a healthy white male under 62 I have no illuision that I will get a discount unless its accumlated points or such. I don't feel slighted in the least but then I like what I am.

I think a collection should be taken up to defend the gun range, and maybe buy the whiner a one-way ticket to Vietnam where he would not be allowed to own a gun.

If you think this is about families, think again.  They would have "family day" if that was the case.  I can see getting women involved with shooting etc, sure.  If you want that, then have an NRA womens' shooting lessons day. Only formal lessons , no fun day at the range?  BTW:  Not ALL women need "shooting lessons". I don't know what your motivations are..but they sound pretty cynical.  Not ALL social fun occasions are set up to "hunt women"..

We conservatives did not come up with this "equal rights and exactly equal rights" thing..we expect men and women are different in many ways, so we don't play the stupid games liberals usually do.

If you are talking about my post , it's the way I feel its no tatic. I offered an opinion there is no being ahead or behind for that matter. Besides it's a blanket statement not a personal attack but if the shoe fits is your decision.

Seniors get discounts because most are on a fixed income, and it is lower than the average worker.  Women get discounts for something like a shooting range to get more women shooters and voters.  Sometimes there is a family discount at places like this to get the teens interested in shooting.  I see no problem with it.  Now, if they have memberships, maybe getting the women in on one free day would get them to sign up for a membership.  Maybe offering 5 free visits for women, to get them to join, etc.  Do we really know what their rules are?

Some give free range time when you buy a gun from them. Now that is just wrong because you got to buy a gun. Bet they do it to increase gun sales . How unfair is that ? Someone should take them to court over that one .................

I certainly didn't intend any personal attack, and hope it wasn't interpreted that way.  I am only saying that as conservatives we never got into those "bean counting" games over civil rights.  Not all things can or should be made exactly equal.  The best hope is that anybody, male, female, child, adult, black, white, rich, poor or whatever...will win some..lose some..but average out pretty good,.... so there is no need to take a tally.
I know I woiuld never be "offended" if my wife, daughter or grandaughter got a break in range charges...I would only figure that such a deal can only help the shooting sports..   I really don't use such a range, having a couple of my own, but I am 100% in favor of encouraging more women to start shooting..
Let's just leave any ideas of petty complaints with the liberals..they are better at..they've had a lot more practice!
