Well I Finally Moved Out Of Gun Hating Illinois.

And filled out all the paperwork for a concealed carry permit. Alabama has a "May issue" law so there's no guarantees I will get one. But I'm a hoping.

If AL is a no go on concealed carry permit, consider an application for a permit from Utah.   Utah has reciprocity with a great many states, and will issue a permit to a non-resident.    Hope this info helps.

No worries about getting your permit in Alabama. Unless you are a felon you'll get it. Down here the county Sherriff's issue them and get to keep all revenue from them for their department off budget or in other words as an add on to their budget. They aren't gonna turn down those extra dollars by refusing permits.

You'll likely find no easier state to get a permit in than Bama. I've held one continuously since I turned 21 in '66.

I don't know what county you settled into here but I've not heard of any county that doesn't hand them out to all who apply that don't have criminal records.

Gandog, you wont know how to act in AL. I have some relatives up in IL and IN. Some of them can't own guns, some of them have to register and pay a fee to keep them in their homes, others in a rural area don't seem to have many restrictions placed on them for hunting long guns, besides no center fire rifles for deer. In AL there just aren't that many restrictions. If you are so inclined, you can have an AK47 with a 75 round drum in your car for self defense without going to the pokey, as long as you're not a criminal. Open carry of a pistol is still legal by state law, some local cities have ordinances against it. Not many law abiding folks in AL that don't have a gun. Not a big problem with little old ladies getting robbed down here because they usually have a snubby in their purse.

That is interesting. Wichita and some other towns tried to ban open carry but it was ruled that they could not make any laws getting around the Kansas state law so they have to allow open carry even though the Wichita police chief made it clear he didn't like that and if anyone tried to do it they would probably at the least be stopped and questioned.

Bugflipper, the relatives in the communist state of IL have a lot of restrictions to deal with for sure but the state of IN certainly has no such restrictions.  We have some caliber restrictions both large and small for deer hunters but as long as you have a carry license from this state or any other how when and where you carry is up to you provided it is within reason.  i.e. no government buildings or schools.

I live in a county in Alabama that has about 125,000 people with 30,000 concealed carry permits, from what the sheriffs department told me.  If 20% of the population is below 21, and maybe 5-10% are too old to keep a permit active, that is almost 1/3 of the county's adult population.  In my county they issue a permit with your picture on it.  One has to wait 10 days for them to see if you are a convicted felon, or there is no outstanding warrents or restraint orders on you.  I'm carried guns in the open in downtown Birmingham when they have a gun show downtown.

Out in my county, a daylight store robbery began with a couple of thugs.  A law abiding citizen stopped the robbery, and shot the back glass out of the getaway car and shot one of the perps in the leg.  He wasn't charged, and was considered a hero.  The perps had a laundry list of crimes.

Another guy's wife was taking a bank deposit to her bank at about 5:30 one winter and was threatened by two perps.  She had her little 357 in hand with her bank bag.  She shot and killed both of them.  The county they were in was a minority controlled county.  So the DA took her to court for excessive force.  They won their case.  Anyway, they moved out of that county.  This was a few years ago.  The thugs also had a laundry list of crimes, one guy was on parole.

That being said, we have some pretty good common sense judges, that don't like criminals.

Yep a felony or domestic violence conviction will throw a wrench in getting an Alabama pistol permit. If you're clear of all that there shouldn't be a problem.

Good move, I did the same thing 10 years ago by moving out of gun hating Mass. NH is a shall issue state, $10 permit fee plus open carry is also legal.

Whoops, sorry OS didn't mean to spread misinformation. Some of them are from East Chicago/Gary/Hammond/SouthBend area just East of the IL border near Chicago. They were complaining of "Assault Weapon" bans the last time I heard anything from them.

The woman and her husband won the case against them for using excessive force.  It was a woman, jumped by two thugs, and she shot them.  The DA thought he had a case because her husband ran a gun store and provided her with the 38 special revolver she used, and she used +P ammo.  Judge ruled in her favor, because she would have been defenceless against the thugs without the revolver.  Didn't matter what kind of ammo she used.  Her husband on the stand said, "sure, I gave her +P ammo.  She is my wife, I love her, and wanted her to have the best defensive ammo I could get legally for her.

Not a problem, the Sheriff's office called me and told me to come down and get my picture taken. Walked in, in less than 25 minutes walked out with my permit still warm from the machine that spit it out. $20 a year, renewable by website.

You know, I heard story after story about DA's prosecuting people shooting in self defense because of the ammo they used. Funny thing is, I never heard of a successful prosecution because of it. I know I've heard of a couple cases where they did it because the guy used his reloaded bullets, supposedly because he could beef them up over storebought brands. But not one did I hear was ever convicted because of it.
