Oh No, Snow
« on: September 07, 2012, 07:13:54 AM »
It snowed last night up in the hills above town.  Temp down in the 30s this morning.  Actually Denali Park was closed yesterday due to snow, they had 4" on parts of the park road.  They reopened the road by afternoon, but a lot of people were shocked.  I'm headed up into the hills this morning just to see what I might find.

Lots of interesting things in this mornings paper.  19 yr old girl shot by hunting partner down at Dot Lake identified.  Moose hunting can be dangerous, watch out for your partner.  A Canadian Tourist teenager got chased down and bit in the buttocks by a Brown Bear.  Those Canadian teens need to learn not to run from Bears.  Enviromentalist are partitioning the Game Board to stop trapping and hunting of Wolves that cross the park boundry, and leave the park.  Fish and Game feels that once they leave the Park they are Alaskan Wolves and subject to trapping or shooting.

Think I'll take a drive down that way this morning.  With fresh snow on the ground they may be easy to spot.  Taking my 25-06 Handi.  Yall have a nice day.

Can do without the snow but you can send some of that 30 degree weather down here towards Alabama.

72 degrees is nice bike weather, but it's 104 here in my part of Texas today. Supposed to cool off this next week.

Today looks to be the last of the hot weather down here, 103 for a high.
Cool front blowing in and it appears it will be either average or below for the remainder of the year.
I and my joints will miss the heat.....  :-\

Got back at 10PM.  Lots of Caribou, all over the road.  Saw one Black Bear, over on another mountain, too far to hike.  Saw four Grizzly sows with cubs.  Did not see any lone Grizzlies.  Wolves have been shot at, and are spooky.  I would see them down in a valley.  As soon as I stopped the Jeep, they took off.  They would get behind cover and keep cover between them and me till they were out of range, went over a hill, or dropped down into a drainage with cover.  Saw one pack of five, and four singles.  Had a nice drive, snow is melting fast.  Went to Central, had lunch then headed back.  Snow on Eagle Summit going north, coming back south it had melted and the road was mud.

Had to stop and wait for the Caribou to get out of the road at 12 mile summit on the way back.  Caribou there by the hundreds.  No wonder they only had a one day season, with an emergency closure.

Saw Sky and another person up on a mountain side.  They had hiked way up.   Looked like they were looking at Caribou gut piles.  Know it was Sky, because my car was parked in the parking lot at the trail head.  No idea what they were doing there, I'll find out either tomorrow or Sunday.

Didn't snow here again and the caribou season was non existant. I haven't seen a bear or a wolf in ages. Coyotes are a daily along with jack rabbits. Oh it's a cool 100 out right now maybe this year we might get our 1 day of snow maybe not.

Hard to imagine a wild anything migration shuting down the road. We used to have tarantula migrations that would do that for a couple of days. Oh and if there is a desert tortise on the road you just drive around him or wait till he crosses. ;D

Daughter texted from Anchorage the other day..."Termination dust hitting some of the mountaintops"...One person's temination dust is another person's opportunities, is another person's pennies from heaven. Guess it's time to package up her snowshoes and mail them to Alaska... ;)

Do the local TV guys go all nuts?  Colorado has a real winter EVERY year, and you would think Honolulu froze over.  Other than too many nuts on the ice when going to work, and the shoveling, I like some winter to keep the bugs small. and they have had a good summer this year.

My elk partner is a bit worried that we may get an early big storm, one of the ones where they rescue hunters with helicopters and leave the camps there.  We always park everything pointing down and out, and check the weather during the nights.  Weather forecasts are worthless as they are either for town or ski areas.  One old friend of my pards did spend 6 days getting his horses and outfit out of a bottom around 30 years ago near where we go. We may go to an alternate area at lower elevation and with a somewhat better main road.  The thing that bothers me more than cold is having a dead elk in 70 weather.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Temp this morning was 24 above zero.  Sky told me it snowed yesterday at UAF up on the hill.  Not enough for it to stick, but it's coming.

Went out shooting last evening to chrony some new loads.  Ended up putting on my heavy wool winter coat, with the goose down vest over it.  My partner threatened to whip me and take it away, he was getting chilled.  We had to leave so he could get warm.  He cranked the heat up on the jeep on the way home, almost ran me out.  I opened my window.  By the time we got home we were threatening to shoot each other, and arguing who's gun would make the biggest hole.  Two old geezers just a fussing.
