BWCA camping
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:32:23 AM »
Looking to head to BWCA for my second time.  Maiden trip was with my two boys and a friend and his son.  We used entry point Hog Creek to Perent Lake, (36 i think).  Headed back there this summer with my father, the boys and maybe another father/son group... so looking for new entry point ideas.

Anyone else travel there?

I placed this in the MN forum because of GBO members, more MN forum users are likely to have been to the BWCA than the camping forum users...

Get your maps out!!  Don't really have a favorite entry point.  Been off the Gunflint Trail,  been out of Ey,  take a look at how many permits per day allowed and how many rods to portage from parking to actual put in.  Depending upon location less folks with less permits and  the further one has to portage to the lake. Summer is generally busy, economy and gas price excepted.  Some folks like an easy start, some like to hoof it in to "get away from the crowds" and remember the end of the trip, that walk out might be longer and hard than you want it to be.
Was up in Ely last May to pick up a new canoe and did a day trip in the wind, rain, sun, a little sleat and snow too, if I remember right.  May take my son on his first wilderness overnight this coming summer.  Been in the canoe since before birth and plenty of time at grandma's cabin and tent camping.  Should be a fun time!

We go the weekend after Memorial Day every year. Mostly early enought that the bugs and flies aren't a problem. We go out of Ely, EP 33. Long portage to the water. More traffic this year than ever before.  I LOVE IT UP THERE!!!
