« on: August 18, 2012, 07:23:55 AM »
Hi i'm new  to mls. I moved to Illinois and now need to buy a ml for hunting. There is a shop down the street that has a knight American for 175. my questions....... are they good rifles? What kind of powder? What kind of primers? And what kind of bullets :P? Can it shoot round ball? Basically any info on this subject would be very helpful. Thanks

Knights are all good rifles by all accounts, so I wouldn't worry from that aspect.  You will get about 100 different thoughts on the powder thing, so I'd see what's available in your area and what works for your gun.  I've had good accuracy from Pyrodex R and P and select, American Pioneer and Jim Shockey's Gold, 777 but after trying all the subs I'm back to just using Goex FFFg in mine.
Any muzzle loader can shoot round balls, so don't be told otherwise, it's just a matter of how fast.  Most fast twist cannot shoot it with more than 60 to 80 grains of powder without losing accuracy from stripping the ball through the rifling.  In my fast twist I get 3" 100 yard groups with 80 gr. Goex FFFg.  I personally like pure lead great plains bullets, but ballistically if you need to take longer shots and don't mind using them, the pointies usually win out, like the SST's etc.  If you have a slower 1:66 or so twist, roundball does much better and can be pushed a little faster.  I still use 80 gr. in my Hawkin 1/2 stock though because it's plenty of power for BP range.

So I went and got it this morning..it came with some of those red plastic caps that hold the 209 primers. Its not the bolt action our a break open. Its got a plunger style. Came with a Tasco scope and he threw in a powder measure and a slip on recoil pad. Are these plastic caps really one time use it can you reuse them?

You can, reuse them, but I would only reuse them for range work. If you use Blackhorn powder, they are a one "shot" deal as they will swell up and become loose. But Blackhorn is not recommended for plunger style guns.

I'm getting about 4-5 shots before my red plastic carriers allow the primer to sink too deep, resulting in misfires. I reuse the carrier till it dies on me. For hunting I always used a fresh one. J
