Oregon Principal Sees Racism in Peanut Butter    Principal Sees Racism in Peanut Butter

http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes...ut-butter.html

By Todd Starnes

An Oregon grade school principal suggested in a newspaper interview that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches might be racially and culturally offensive.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students who might not eat sandwiches?” Verenice Gutierrez told the Portland Tribune.

Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School, was being interviewed about the school district’s equity training program designed to narrow the achievement gap. The newspaper said she “picks up on the subtle language of racism every day” and used the peanut butter sandwich to illustrate her point.

“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ let them tell you,” she told the newspaper. “Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

The equity program is called “Courageous Conversation” and it involves taking educators through an intensive program so they can understand their own “white privilege,” the newspaper reported.

Robb Cowie, the communications director for Portland Public Schools told Fox News they were aware of the story and to their knowledge it was factually accurate.

“What we’re trying to do in our school district is to ensure that we have instruction that is meaningful and relevant to ever student in the classroom,” Cowie said.

In some cases, that means offering programs strictly for students of color.

The newspaper provided information about a drum corps that was set up for black and Latino boys. One parent complained that the class discriminated against women, Asians, whites and Native Americans.

Guitierrez defended the class and denied it was discriminatory.

“When white people do it, it is not a problem,” she told the Tribune. “But if it’s for kids of color, then it’s a problem? Break it down for me. That’s your white privilege, and your whiteness.”

Cowie said the district did not have a problem with the principal’s statements.

So does the school system provide clubs strictly for white students?

“I’m not aware of that in Portland,” he said.

“Big picture – what we are trying to encourage in our district – are educational experiences that are relevant that give kids support, encouragement, engagement,” Cowie said. “We are certainly not trying to create situations where students are excluded.”

He said the district was addressing the issue of so-called ‘white privilege’ to even the playing field so that all children have an opportunity succeed.

“It’s an understanding that families and students come into the educational setting with different backgrounds and different strengths and in some cases different advantages,” he said. “That translates into different educational outcomes.”

Cowie said the district wants to narrow the achievement gap for “students of color.”

“Persistently we have not done a good enough job educating students of color and specifically African-American students,” he told Fox News. “That’s what the program is addressing. How can we find a way to support African American students, their families – so that we are producing better outcomes and narrowing the achievement gap.”

The story generated a number of comments from local residents outraged over the equity training program. One reader suggested that under the school’s policies, the phrase “American as apple pie” could be considered offensive.

“I am sick of progressives’ attacks on our culture. I am offended when people coming to our country find it necessary to denigrate our culture and teachers who are teaching our children somehow feel like they have to apologize for being American,” the reader wrote.

Another wrote: “Teaching against peanut butter sandwiches and white privilege is critical thinking? No – that is racism and radical activism.”

And that brings us back to the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

“It’s not really about a sandwich,” he said. “It’s about how do we reach kids and speak to them through experiences that are meaningful to them – that are understandable to them so that they have an entry point into the curriculum and can engage in learning.”

He said they don’t want to make any student feel unwelcomed – intentionally or unintentionally that might disconnect a child or a family from the educational system – even if it’s a PB&J.

“Certainly a sandwich isn’t going to do it in itself,” he said. “But it is one of those things that we want to be aware of in all aspects of our instructional practice.”

Death to the peanut butter oppressors!!! This is an outrage!!!  ;) ;) ;)

(Well, it's as good a reason as any to be offended. And after all, it is Oregon, where this sort of foolishness fits into daily norms of behavior. It needs to be pointed out that since a prinicipal these days has at least a masters degree and probably a PhD, he's really really smart and knows lots of stuff. Who knows, he may have done his doctoral thesis on the horrors of PBJ sandwiches.)

when you don't have pie, cake, or candy in the house, a PBJ is just as good.

Is it any wonder that our school system is so ineffectual with people like this in charge of it?

When you go to a foriegn country you eat waht the locals do. They don't have American meals to make you feel good about youself.
When we try to cater to everyone and apologize for being white I think we are being stupid.

Wecome to America. Now eat American food, pack a lunch or wait until you get back home. Just one of the things that's wrong with this country, libs wanting everyone to kiss every foreign butt that's in OUR country.
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.

The Aztecs invented peanut butter. The French invented jelly. American GIs in WWII put them together since both were in their rations. Sounds like cultural diversity to me.  :D

How about closing down the Cafeteria, and letting the lil Rug Rats bring their own lunch, like I did.
That way everyone gets what they like. Taco's, Goat meat on whatever,Chittlings, or Head Cheese, or the old PB on White bread!

Reminds me of the joke about the three friends and coworkers....Juan, Ivan, and George, who worked on a high rise, and brought their own lunch. One day Juan said, I'm sick of Taco's and If I get another one, Ill jump off the building.Ivan said he was sick and tired of Polish sausage. The blond headed George said he was tired of Bologna!, The next day at lunch they all had the same thing, and all three jumped. At the funeral for the three friends, Juan's wife said.......If I had known he was tired of taco's I would have fixed him something different.I would have done the same replied Ivan's wife.
They both turned to the wife of George............Don't look at me! He always fixed his own lunch :o

BTW...Not all of us in Oregon are Liberal Democrats and Republicans ;) Just those folks north of and including Eugene!

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich sparks controversy: Can we really ban nut products from schools?     By Piper Weiss, Shine Staff

  • Pr(ThinkStock)It's hard to believe something as small as a peanut could cause so much controversy. But put it in a lunch bag and it can divide a school.
In Viola, Arkansas, a debate is heating up, after a student had his peanut butter and jelly sandwich confiscated at lunchtime. The school has a no-peanut-products policy due to a few students with allergies, so the teacher helped the little boy get a new lunch and sent home a note explaining the situation to his mom.
That note didn't go over well, apparently. Soon after the incident, a 'School Nut Ban Discussion' group was launched on Facebook by parents conflicted over the policy.
5 peanut myths debunked

Some parents believe allergy-free students shouldn't have to cater to a few kids' health sensitivities, particularly if it means cutting out healthy or low-cost snacks packed in their own child's lunchbox.
The mom who packed the confiscated PB&J sandwich thinks kids with allergies should learn "how to manage the problem" rather than live inside a "bubble," according to a local news report.

Other parents of special needs kids feel like they're playing second fiddle to those with allergies. "There are some autistic children that will only eat a PB&J sandwich or nothing at all," one parent opposing the ban argued on Facebook.
According to the Viola District Superintendent John May, this is the first push-back on a policy in place in his school for some time.

"The policy is in place to protect those with a severe, life threatening problem," May told Area Wide News, a Missouri-based news site. "Until we figure out something else, it would be foolish to drop the policy."
Snack ideas for kids with nut allergies Over the span of a decade, reports of kids with peanut allergies have spiked by 18 percent, according to the CDC. Today, about 1 in 25 children suffer from the condition, and about 18 percent of them have had attacks in school. As a result, school-wide peanut bans have doubled in the past two years. But they haven't come without a fight.

One Connecticut mother of an allergic child was shocked by the hostility she was met with when proposing a peanut ban at her own kid's school. "People were extremely rude," she told the Associated Press. "They just thought it was a ridiculous request."
A child's well-being may have triggered the debate, but at the core of the conflict is a turf war. Is one parent's concerns about their own child interfering with the way other kids are raised? Some parents of allergic kids know being unpopular comes with the territory.

"Nobody wants to be a Peanut Allergy Mom," writes Mommyish blogger Gloria Fallon, whose son has severe life-threatening peanut allergies. "My main concern is my son's health, but I also don't want everyone to hate us. I actually am sorry for all the inconvenience having a PA kid creates. I know if my son didn't have food allergies, I'd probably think the kid who did was a pain in the a--. So I try to understand that for the most part, no one gets what we're going through."

Back in Viola, parents are looking for a compromise within the elementary school--hoping for a middle-ground approach some other institutions have taken. As opposed to banning nuts, some schools require all their teachers to be trained in using EpiPens, a life-saving device used in severe allergic attacks. Separating nut-eaters from non-nut-eaters in the lunchroom is another way to protect kids and raise awareness among students.

Major nut recall causes concerns
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, a nut allergy advocacy group, believes compromise is better for kids with allergies than an outright ban. "What we want is everyone always thinking there could be a possibility (of an allergic reaction) and be on guard for it," the group's founder, Anne Munoz-Furlong, told the Associated Press.

But with compromise comes with new problems. Isolating a child at a separate table because of his or her allergies can create social ostracism and lead to bullying. (The American Pediatrics Association even cautions parents and teachers about the risk of harassment kids with peanut allergies face.)

Sitting at a special nut-free table or being the subject of a health lesson in class may save a kid's life but it won't win him any popularity contests. Fallon says that every time she drops her allergic son Nick off at a party, she has to run through worst case scenarios and procedures with the person in charge. "This usually results in the person looking frightened and probably wishing they didn't invite Nick," she says. "Nobody likes the finale, me especially."

Why does anyone with half a brain even listen to this stupidity..?

As far as I am concerned, PB & J sandwiches are the epitome of "diversity'..

The peanut butter was developed by a brilliant black man, Dr george Washington Carver..jelly made from grapes perhasps picked by illegal hispanic aliens..all within two slices of white bread..
You can use brown or black bread if you wish..or how about Hawiian King's bread?  As I have often said..."ya can't fix stupid!"

While I can sympathize with any child who has a severe allergy..such as my grandaughter... when she gets in the same neighborhood as a cat..
It seems so strange, kids have always eaten peanut butter in sandwiches..and I never saw anybody ever kick out over it.
By the article, it appears to be a recent pheonomenon...which is on the increase.  I wonder if they are pursueing something more than the symptom..to what is the CAUSE.  People are doing things and smoking things they never used nor smoked years ago. I was in the VA hospital yesterday for some minor surgery where they had to put me under.  A week previous, during my pre-op interview with the anestheologist, he practically went oveer my life history.  Tword the end he said; " I feel I already know the answer, but do you smoke or use any illegal substances? ...And did you ever use them?"  Naturally, I replied NO to both questions.  Almost apologetically, he said.."I have to ask that, because if we are not aware of it...serious damage, even death could result."
What I am getting at is that since all that crap is lillegal..it seems doubtful they have tested them for side-effects and long term damage.  They have pretty well isolated the long term effects of cigarette smoking and warned people off them..but have they researched marijuana the same way?  Then too, if they did figure it out, it seems the illegal growers are developing stronger and stronger strains every few years.
Legal drugs can be a real problem too, but at least they are well researched and most side and long-term effects are known.
Still, one wonders just how much harm is being done to the general society at large.......
