Wimmins + cell phones = DANGER!!!
« on: September 14, 2012, 06:13:13 AM »
Driving back from PA on a 2 lane expressway I found myself behind a vehicle going generally under the speed limit but speeding up then slowing down.  It was staying pretty much in the right lane, but was weaving.

My first instinct when I see something like that is to get as far away from them as I can.  That doesn't always work as I was once rear ended by a DUI who came across 4 lanes of rush hour traffic to get me!  Guess he was just "going my way!"   ::)

Anyway, I passed this vehicle and what to my wondrous eyes did appear?  The driver, female of course, was TEXTING WITH BOTH HANDS, LOOKING DOWN AT HER CELL PHONE!!!   :o  The car was being steered by another female in the passenger's seat!   ::)

I tell ya, I have had some real close calls on my bike, and it usually involves 2 things; a woman and a cell phone!   >:(

I know stupid knows no gender... I'm just sayin...  ;)

Clearly, you guys aren't riding your bikes enough. There are plenty of men and kids on cell phones also driving dangerously. And men driving aggressively or carelessly. Tail gaters for motorcycles are very often men driving pickups. And then plenty of cyclists that just don't know how to ride well. Here in Minnesota, if I see a good competent rider, it's remarkable. Most treat them like toys.

well I don' know wat ya call enough, but I mostly use my bike to commute to work, a 100 mile round trip. So I'm generally in rush hour traffic when I'm on my bike. And it's mostly broads I see with a phone jammed to their head or holding it in front of themselves texting.

2 years ago my daughter, 16 yrs old got t boned by a woman runnin a red light on her cell phone right in the middle of town.my daughter was fine but it ruined the car i had just built for her from a wreck. after she had only 65 miles on it. the only good thing was her insurance paid off 3500 buks for a car we had 1200 buks in.but if she had hit a couple feet farther up on the car my daughter would of been hurt bad.

what are you riding, Cuts?

An old Honda, a 750K8.......one of the first superbikes! :)

Not the greatest, but I picked it up for $400 three years ago, put some money and work into the carbs and it's run great, except for minor electrical problem last month, ever since I got it.

I'm not really "into" the whole motorcycle thing. Had several in my single days and did the "road trip thing" coast to coast back in 76 on a semi chopped 72 Strumpet. But when I got married I gave it up. Then my job, which had been two blocks from my home for 25 years, moved to the "big city" and I had a chance to buy this thing ..........IT GET'S 45MPG! ;D

I haven't ridden a two-valve Honda 750 since... well, since about 1980, it belonged to a biker chick I knew in the navy, it was an early 70s 750. I remember the K - four pipes!

I went through a bunch of Suzuki GS in the 80s/90s, recently got an FZ1 after a 10-year layoff. It's great to be on the road again. Took my little one riding a few days ago...

It's not just women here. Almost everyone I see has a cellphone stuck up to their ear or sitting on top of the steering wheel with both hands holding it. Scares the heck out of me. Fortunately rush hour here is about like most places midnight traffic so the exposure isn't like a lot of you experience.

Anymore I'm gun shy with any vehicle coming off a side road.I amazes me how they can't see my headlight(5:00am or so).Around here it's more like my truck is bigger than your bike.
XLI the one to go with.

Just this past July in a parking lot of a local grocery store.
I had parked in a spot--my door was open and my left foot outside on the ground, when, as I watched without chance to react--a woman (not that it could not have been a man) turned into the spot next to me with her cell pasted to her ear.
The right side of her front quarter panel---Right at the location where the quarter panel came to her passenger door--impacted the ouside of the driver door of the Mustang.
Needless to say I was very lucky---it pushed my door into the door post and did not close the door on my leg.
She had an insurance card but the insurance had lapsed---Police could not investigate because it was a private parking lot. I had uninsured motorist insurance but i was still responsible for the deductable and I lost a considerable amount because of the damage and lost value on trade-in.
I hate cell phones in cars---folks are not driving, they are carrying on a conversation--no matter the importance of the call.
Blessings
TEXAS, by GOD

Those 750's are real popular as a basis for choppers.  One of my Club Brothers has one.  I think there's even a web site...  :-\

#2 son called one day as he was diving down from Athens.  He knows how I feel about cell phones and driving and when I got on him about it, I can still do that even though he's 34  ;D , his reply was "I'm a man Pop, I can multi-task!"   ::)

The most annoying and unsettling around here are GUYS that tailgate motorcycles. I had two yesterday do me that way on a two lane while Linda and I were out. I was doin the speed limit, and they had plenty of room to pass. Usually I turn around a little, and look, and they seem to get uncomfortable, and either back off, or go ahead and pass. If that doesn't work, I start slowin down. That usually gets the problem solved, and they go on.
I think it's mostly DWHIA, but there are aggressive drivers, and their usually men around here. The women, young girls, and young guys, are just stupid when it comes to cars and phones.
Another annoying driver however, is the crotch rocket crowd. They too, are rude, and self centered many times. They weave thru traffic including motorcycle traffic, go between cars, and pass on shoulders, run wheelies on busy interstates, passin cars, and other bikes while doin so, and blow by bikes like mine too close, tryin to impress. Also when they finally go too far, and wreck and kill themselves, it ties up traffic for hours.

Yup! http://www.hondachopper.com/

Found that place when I was looking for info about rebuilding the carbs. Some damn fine looking iron there. Also some very knowledgeable people  when it comes to the old SOHC fours. 8)

I go by a place about twice a week, where a guy has an older Kawasaki 4 cylinder Police bike for sale in his yard. Still fully dressed, lights and all. Tempting to buy, and do a little cleaning up. It still looks to be in good shape.

Fine bike, a dressed KZ1000, for its era. If the carbs are gunked it'll be a huge PIA to set aright... otherwise I'd like one!

I never understood why Suzuki didn't pursue that cop bike market, back in the 80s... a GS1000 or GS1000G/1100G shaftie would have been a better cop bike for that time: somewhat more power, much better handling & more comfy!

Isn't cell phone useage in y'all's states illegal while driving?  In Washington it is illegal to text, or fiddle wtih the phone while driving, but you can talk on it if it's on speaker.  Of course the cops are allowed to use the phone, radio, or anything they want.  I don't see a lot of people with the phone up to their ear, until they come to a stop light.  I don't think that's legal either.
Apparently it's legal to shoot up while driving, though, because I see needles along the highways all the time.

Hillbill,

Not THAT big of a deal, I did it in stages, first out to the east coast, then back to Iowa, two week lay over, and then headed west. Stopped when I wanted too, stayed as long as I wanted, or long enough to do maintainence, moved on when I felt like it. Took me the entire summer. It was Americas 200th birthday,  I had sold my fence building business that I started in high school and had more money than brains.

Two back tires, three chains, two sprocket sets, can't remember how many sets of points, one clutch cable, one set of rear wheel bearings, and one battery. My biggest concern was that Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrical system but it never gave me any real trouble.

Of all the bikes I owned in my youth that one is the only one I really wish I'd kept. It started life as a 72 650 Tiger, one of the early "Oil in Frame" models. When I got it it was already in a basket, kid tried to rebuild it and got in over his head. I put a 750 upper end on the cases, TT pipes, 6" over front tubes, had the frame raked to bring it down, shorty apes, and a King/Queen seat from Gawd only knows where.

I Loved that bike!!!!! 8)

It's illegal to text while driving in Jawja so of course nobody does that anymore...  ::)  But I almost got rear ended on the way home from work Friday... TWICE!!!  BY THE SAME WOMAN!!!   >:(  Stop and go traffic on the expressway; the kind of "almost" as in when you look in the rear view, see it coming and push down hard on the brake and brace yourself!   ::)  How she got that car stopped I'll never know, but she was close enough that I could see she never even took the cell phone away from her ear!   ::)

Traffic started back up, then stopped and I'll be darned if she didn't do the same thing again!   >:(  My anti-homocide drugs notwithstanding, I was mad as the devil and started to get out right there on the expressway.  But traffic started moving and not wanting to go to jail, I let it go.  At least she had sense enough to change out of my lane and I saw she put the cell down.   ;D

Victory is makin a huge push on police bikes, tryin to replace Harley. I stopped by a dealer in McKinney the other day and looked all the new Victorys. Not for me. Too space age lookin. There were some exceptionally nice Harley tradeins out front. Made me wonder why they spent all that money on chrome, and custom paint, to trade it off. Two Heritage Softail Classics completely dressed out with leather and chrome, and one with a flame paint job all over. Thousands of dollars into both bikes. Go figure.
