I missed a Coyote
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:42:44 AM »
OK, before Vince tells the rest of the world. I missed a Coyote.  Vince and I were driving down near Nenana.  There was the remains of a Moose lying down off the road, next to the trees.  As we approached a Coyote jumped up and stood there looking at the truck.  I reached for my rifle in the seat behind me, but was unable to reach it.  Vince reached back and handed it to me.  I then remembered the magazine was empty.  I removed the magazine fast and opened a box of shells.  I loaded the magazine then got out of the truck.  As I got out the Coyote took off through the trees, then stopped looking back.  I moved down and away from the road to where it looked like I had a clear shot, and took the shot, but too much brush between me and the Coyote.  This animal had a beautiful thick looking coat.  I'm really sick I was so unprepared, and let this one get away. Never fails, you do things right time and time again, and no one is there to notice.  You screw up once and someone it there, shaking his head.  Makes you want to crawl into a snow cave and hide the rest of the winter.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yeah, better to have seen and missed than to have never seen at all. Even so, i'm still regretting my miss on a song dog with a bow, only about 25 yards but I swear he jumped the shot. The critter went about 3 feet straight up and my arrow passed right under him. Wish I could do that one over again, with a 12ga. :-)

My next door neighbor is a young guy. He and some of his firends drive deer from the opening bell in the morning till quiting time. He calls me when they are driveing something close to here. This morning he called. He told me that they fired 27 shots at coyotes yesterday and didn`t hit a one. When running my woods for deer today I took a real nice 8 point buck and was standing over him when the driver comming my way started to yell at me. I looked up and saw a coyote running accrossed the field, I got off 2 shots and missed, I`m running with the right crowed.  ???  In my defence though, I was carring an Encore handgun with a 16 in barrel and a by-pod on it and had to shoot off hand standing which is about impossible to do with that gun.

We all miss sometimes. At least us honest ones... But you really outta quit missing. I've missed enough for everyone this year! Between getting caught with only the wifes lever action .357 and a pocket full of 125gr 38 special and a 300 yd coyote and two young males sitting in the sun at 1300 while I blaze away with my .223 at them I've been flustered a few times this year.
I hate when i miss. But when I do, I can always come up with a reason why.

Heck, we don't even have ice caves to crawl into down here. Maybe I should just carry a tent from now on so's I'll have sumpn to crawl into.

On that note... I pointed out a big hog to my son in law the other day that was 80 ft below us and walking down a stream about 50 yards away. So he won't take the shot while he's walking so I whistle at him and he stops. Son in law misses the 50 yard shot with my lever gun and promptly jams it. So when I get the jam fixed the hog is leaving like a plant worker that just heard the whistle blow. I proceed to follow him up the trail with as many shots as I could get off in a short time. I'm hitting on both sides of him and at his heels and son in law commences yelling "why don't you lead him more"
In my best patient voice and with few bad words as I could manage I explained to him that had he not missed the still hog at fifty yards I would not have had to lead him as much!   ::)
