Sierra 120 Prohunter bullets in a TC Encore 260 Remington
« on: September 18, 2012, 04:50:04 PM »
With the Whitetail season around the corner I am returning to my search for an accurate deer load for my 260 Rem. with a 24" barrel.  Last season I had no problems with 1 shot kills @ 50 - 60 yards with 130 Accubonds and Sierra 120 ProHunters.
On paper the Sierras are a tad more accurate than the Nosler.  I consider myself a moderately meticulous reloader and have not achieved a consistent 1" group @ 100yds. (Which I do achieve with my Rem. 700 in 270 Win.).
I am going to try the 120 ProHunter with IMR 4064, IMR 4350 and Reloder 19.
Does anyone have experience with this bullet and these powders?  Any suggestions will be mot appreciated.   Thanks in advance.  Rol

I have a 6.5 JDJ (14") and a browning a bolt in .260. Both of these like the 120 grains, no matter WHO made them! There are so many suitable powders for the .260, you just have to try them. You MAY have a scope or other mechanical problem causing the accuracy issue. Are your groups large circles, or wide/ tall strings. "Strings" can be caused by bad primer/ powder choices. Barrels on hard surfaces are bad too! I once traded a guy for his INaccurate .308. I changed out his Tasco for a redfield and groups closed up to almost 1 inch! HIS ammo too!
The fact that you MUST move a break action from the rest CAN induce accuracy errors compared to the bolt actioned model 700. Try to mark the rest AND stock of your .260 to see if that improves your groups. Just be certain the marks line up exactly for each shot!

I'm just redoing my Ruger compact in 260. My old load used the old 120 BarnesX bullet (without the bands). Worked well, but those bullets are no longer available. In addition to what you list, I am planning on trying Ramshot Hunter, which is supposed to provide good accuracy.

I got the best accuracy in the 20" 260 Rem H&R Superlight with IMR4320 and 120gr bullets, unfortunately the light barrel heats up fast and almost always throws the third shot.

My daughters rifle likes H 414, CCI 250 primers and Sierra 120s. I dont have the pretty pictures to show you but it shoots real nice out of her M77 MKII. I dislike Nosler BTs out of her rifle. They tend to splatter when they hit.
