Contender Barrel in .375 Kix ???
« on: September 06, 2012, 11:45:37 AM »
At the gun shop I work in, we bought a bunch of used Contender barrels from an estate collection. In the mix is a relatively heavy 15" Bullberry barrel in .375 Kix. I can find no reference to the caliber on Bullberry's web-page and can find absolutely no reference to it anywhere on the internet. Anybody ever heard of such an animal? Just looking at the chamber, it appears to be a straight walled case, possibly just a shortened .375 Win. I have given up calling Bullberry. I have made at least 10 attempts and only get a busy signal. I even sent them a fax and got no response. I figured if anybody ever heard of it, somebody here would have. Can't really sell it if I don't know what the hell it is....

It got me curious too. I Googled it and can't find a thing on that caliber. Must be some kind of wildcat that didn't catch on.

I've known Fred for 25 years plus, ran with him all the years I lived near him in UT's Dixie, and I don't remember that one ever even being mentioned by him.   Probably an early barrel, maybe even from when he first started building them in Las Vegas.    By any chance is the barrel marked Las Vegas instead of Utah?

The easiest "correct" answer would be to contact Fred.  Getting him on the phone may not be easy unless you are old friend or customer, but a call or FAX to his staff would be.   They can easily ask him and reply back.

Hey guys! September from Bullberry here.

We have no record of this odd stamping or special caliber, because of its age. However, even during that era we were willing to custom-stamp barrels at a customer's request. Quite a few barrels have left the shop with custom caliber designation in the past (typically using a pet name or the customer's name). On a more modern barrel we would be sure to engrave both the unique designation AND the true caliber (probably under the forearm or on the bottom of the underlug).

As with all of our products, if you need assistance from us or are interested in finding out more about it by having one of us check it out in house, simply send it in. We don't charge for stuff like that, so you would only have the expense of shipping.

I would probably recommend refinishing the barrel if you send it in, to include a new engraving with the appropriate caliber designation. This is a $50 charge typically, but in this case where clarity is an issue we can reduce that expense to $25. The barrel would likely be in house for up to 2 weeks depending on when our next bluing was scheduled.

I apologize for not having gotten in contact with you sooner. We received an email today that referenced your GBO thread, so I figured this would be the best method of contact. We are a small production facility and the phone is regularly busy. If you would like to call us, please make sure to do so from 8am-noon or 1pm-5pm Mon-Fri, Mountain time.

I don't have a fax from you, though Jean thought she remembered reading something about this caliber question. Again, apologies for the lack of communication, particularly if we did receive a fax and misplaced it.

Dependine on length, a shortened .375 Win. could be a .375 Super Mag. design by Elgin Gates.
I haven't followed IHMSA very close, but back in the 80's it was a hot number in Dan Wesson and Sevil revolvers.

Kitbashing wildcats goes back a long ways and has continued to grow in popularity from its start, with folks adding their own name for them.  I'd bet hundreds of them tried so closley matched something else they didn't become popular, many even no more than in one firearm.   So the "Kix" could have been formed from just about anything to any spec the Contender could handle, with few produced.

I had that bbl built for a customer several years ago.  I'm the "ATM" that's referenced on it.  "Kix" was/is the gentleman's nick name.  The chambering is a full length .375 Winchester.  Let me know if you have any more questions.
