dump pouch
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:55:07 PM »
Who remembers the revolver rounds dump pouch?  When my dad was a trooper in the 50's, he carried his extra revolver rounds in belt loops, like on a western rig.  Reloading was accomplished by removin one round at a time from the loops.  When I went to work in the 1970, there was no provision for reloading.  Extra rounds were simply kept in the right pants pocket.  At the range, we started with 60 rounds in the right pocket.  Later, we got the dump pouch for everyday carry.  It held 6 rounds.  To reload, you unsnapped the pouch and rounds fell into your hand.  Shortly after I went off the highway, they went to speed loaders carried on the belt.
I always had a fondess for the dump pouch to carry revolver rounds.  Not the fastest way to reload, but it put those rounds in your hand instantly.  Anyone remember those?

I still have a pair I use with .45 Colt- work great. For .38/357, I use speed strips in a horizontal cell-phone pouch. The small pouch will hold 2 loaded speed strips.

Yeah, I remember the dump pouches, they were department issue when I went thru the academy.
"Dump" was an appropriate term!  Six rounds in your hand - all pointed in different directions while you tried to orient them and drop them in the cylinders.

First thing I did was go out and buy a belt slide with 12 loops (high tech!), worked the loops so the rounds were a loose slip-fit so you could easily pull out two at a time to load.  Second thing was buy speedloaders.  With all the equipment carried nowadays there wouldn't be room on the belt for the combination of loops and speedloader cases!

I have a couple of dump pouches turned in by a PD years ago.  I carry speed strips with 38 specials in them.  357 mag won't fit in them with the speed strips.  They are handy for backups when I shoot up all the speed loaders.
What's my favorite Contender?  The one I'm shooting!
