35 Whelen ammo suggestions please
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:29:07 AM »

I picked up a H&R handi rifle chambered in 35 Whelen for Mississippi's "muzzleloader" season. I know this round is getting a lot of attention from the Mississippi and Louisiana hunters right now. I would appreciate any info for this rifle/cartridge combination.
I'd like to know what factory loads shot poor/good/excellent for you in the Handi Rifle. I would like to stay 225gr or less. If I find a really accurate factory load, I would probably hunt with this combo all season. I have mounted and bore sighted a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9x50 and worked the trigger to just under 3#. Time to send some lead down range. Thanks in advance for any and all infomation shared.

The Hornady ammo has been mentioned many times as being a good choice, I wouldn't know tho, it's not available here! ::) The Remington ammo has also been favored to a lesser degree, but misfires seem to be more common with it.

I use Remington with 250gr Core-loct bullet.  But I prefer my reloads using Nosler 225 gr partition.

Gendoc,
please send me that load data. I might just buy the brass and other components and have a friend of mine who does reload make some up for me.

I think this is your best choice!

I did not comment as I did not have any factory loads to suggest... Also you specfically siggested225g or less... I feel you are missing the boat as the Whelen is wonderful with a good 250G bullet!

Since you seem open to handloading... My own fav loading is a 250G Speer bullet a Rem case and Primer and stiff loading of RL15 powder.
For a 200G load I love AA2520 and a 200G Hornady spitzer. Out of my own Whelen its going almost 3000fps and absolutely flattens everything I have shot with it.

Good luck,

I'll have some data for ya in a week or so.  Doing some work using reformed '06 brass, 190gr cast PP, 200gr cast GC, and 250gr cast GC.  I don't shoot jacketed in this or my Max.  Got to pick up some other powders than what I have.  Goat

I used to have a friend who cast a beautiful 280g RN for the Whelen. Wonderfully accurate. But he moved away so my source is gone. I ran across another member with these and he sent me some. These heavy weights are great in the Whelen!!

Really?!?! Ypu gotta take it there don't ya??

Frankly, I am beginning to think YOU have the rim envy but with all your banter have painted such a picture you cannot go back on your thoughts...As I mentioned before, you sound a BIG PRO rimless horn.. but your own signature line shows 24 RIMMED Handis out of a total of 36 (listed) Thats a 2:1 ratio in FAVOR of rims my friend. ;)

I don't care whats in the "vaults"... I do read what you post and I KNOW what you say. Actions speak louder than words... By your own hand, you show MORE rimmed Handis than rimless...

We can keep this nice or not, your choice. I enjoy reading your posts, I really do, but consistant jabs about rims is getting old quickly. Remember, you took it here, not me. You tell me where we go from here.....

based on several past threads from folks.... the "vs" has been available.
and we, (both) of us and others have contributed.  if you think i start most of this....you need to read between the lines.  yes, i took it here... this time.  you don't know about the pm's i get from folks that have rimless handi's, much less other brands. that are thinking there money has been wasted by doing such.

since you have a good memory, you should remember back last year when i posted about this problem.
it slowed for a while, but then it became wide open again. i just try to help the folks here that don't understand the systems.  i do not just tell them what they should have or what i think they should have.
and i'm kinda like what you said, "i don't care whats in your vaults"  but i will add to that
from your post.... " I KNOW what you say. Actions speak louder than words"  if that is true, its just my opinion, speculations and assumptions

 just like this...you said....
"Also you specfically siggested225g or less... I feel you are missing the boat as the Whelen is wonderful with a good 250G bullet!"

Easy friends, easy !!! Hostilities should directed to the anti-gun/2nd Amendment crowd, not to our fellow sportsman. I appreciate the recommendations from y'all. Now pull up a chair, have a bowl of gumbo, and let the 35 Whelen recipes flow. Thanks sincerely for the help, especially since I'm a brand new member to the forum.

If you are still looking for factory loads I have pretty good luck in my Whelen with Buffalo Bore 225 Barnes Tsx. The new boxes that i just received also list a 180 grain that is even hotter. Check their website for ballistic info. God bless

I suppose it is hidden in the rules or only in the minds of state legislators..but I'm really wondering;

Where in tarnation does a 35 Whelen fit into either muzzle loader or primitive description?  ;)

Ironglow, that kinda threw me for a loop too on the muzzle loader thing ! Midway USA has the Hornady Superformance 200gr soft point at 2910 fps for $28.99 a box. They also have the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 225gr by Federal for $37.99 a box. Double Tap and Nosler both load the 225gr AccuBond for the Whelan that they carry as well.

I hear this!!

BUT, I think it is simply the 35 bore diameter(minimum), in a primitive "style" rifle making it acceptable for the primitive seasons in some states.

Yup, Louisiana and Mississippi have "primitive weapons" deer seasons that allow .35 cal and larger open  hammer single shot cartridge guns.

Back on subject, I have found the 200 Grain Hornady Superformance to shoot better than anything else out of my T/C Whelen. They are also $10 to $15 per box cheeper than anything else available around here.  But, hang on.  They do pack a wallop, more so than the Remington rounds, for sure.

I have mine sighted in with the Hornady SuperPerformance ammo and it shoots great. I could use use some load data to throttle it down some using 200gr Hornady RN and 250gr Hornady RN bullets. Also does anyone load the Barnes 180gr TTSX or 200gr TTSX bullets ?

I guess Miss and LA went to singleshot hammered cartridge firearms to get more people in to hunting and generate license sales. Muzzleloading rifle loads had become so bastardized anyways using 150gr charges of powder and 357 bullets in 44 sabots trying to achieve 2600fps with a 6-24X scope and try to make a long range rifle out of them. LA and Miss compete with each other as far as what is allowed for hunting and once one state does something the other follows suit.
