Range Report: 45 caliber TC Hawkin rifle
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:22:32 AM »
It was very breezy which made it difficult to keep my pan powder in place so I fired only two shots. Very light recoil.  I'll wait for a better weather day to develop a hunting load using conical bullet. Any suggestions?
Distance:  35 yards
Load:  50 grs of FFFg with .440 round ball w/lubed patch

Looks like you are off to a roaring good start!

Over the years I've heard of many ways to determine the best load for a front loader, from as much powder as it takes to cover the ball in your cupped hand to whatever won't burst the barrel.  The one I've seen recommended by the serious shooters is to start with 1 1/2 x the caliber in grains.  So for your .45 that will be 1.5 x 45 = 67.5, round up to 68 grains.  Fffg is good.  For deer hunting you may want to increase the load to the point where accuracy starts to fall off.  For small game what you have should be good, or play with different loads and patches until you get the best groups and use that.

I remember reading about someone using 65 grains in a .45 on a deer, ball went in the chest and was found under the skin at the rear hip, for what it's worth.

 Very nice!
I will be interested to see what you can do at 100yds. I am also waiting to see what performance you get with conicals.
