303 Rifle
« on: February 08, 2004, 05:15:22 AM »
Howdy Everyone,
Maybe someone knows about this gun I bought.
It has a sport stock on it. On the off bolt side it is stamped S No4 MKI.
It has stamped in the top side of reciever US PROPORTY.
There is a B under the serial number.
On bolt side over chamber stamped ENGLAND.
The rear sight is just a little peep that has two peeps that flip one is mark 300 the other 600.
It shoots good.
Any ideas on where it was made? What 303 wher stamp US?
Thanks

Wilbe,
I'm sorry to say I don't have a source you can go to at the moment, but because of England's inability to keep up with demand, the U.S. chipped in to build  Mark 1 No.4 Enfields in .303 caliber.  Do you have any more information stamped on the receiver that might tell you what U.S. Facility made it?

These are not the 1917 Enfields that were made in the U.S. in 30-06 caliber. esentually for our troops in WWI because of shortages in '03 Springfields.

I believe that "Savage Firearms" is the "US" contractor  who built these  Mk1 No.4's 303 britt's.                                       BigBill

The stamp U.S. Property is a result of the Lend Lease Act.  Although we gave weapons to Great Britian during the early days of WW II, we hid it under the law and "lent" bullet launcers, destroyers and such to the besieged island nation uder the Lend Lease Act.  Subtle distinctions under the law, but thems's the facts.

Well I took the stock off other than some big P's stamps and crowns.Thats about it.
There is a flaming O here and there.
The bolt has the serial number on it and in front of the number is a big S.
The barrel looks like it has been shortend at sometime it is 18 1/4 inchs long.
It has a tall ramped bead front sight on it.
I got it in a pawn shop for not much and it shoots pretty close to point of aim.
Would like to put a low power scope or a red dot on it for a brush gun.
Anyone know witch mount would work?

As already stated, you have a Savage built No. 4 MkI .303 Enfield SMLE. There are about 3 companies that make scope mounts that will mount up to your rifle with no drilling and tapping. A freind of mine has a B-Square mount for the No.4 that works really well. They are not cheap. The mount will cost about $50. Good shootin'...

how much did you pay for it? i've heard that there are unscruplous gun sellers who will raise the price on one stamped US property because some people think it makes them more collectable

Sounds Like it was made by Savage.
I think that Winchester and Remington made a few also.
How many grooves does the Rifling have in yours?
Mine only has 2 very wide grooves!
