Ryan faults Obama on plan to close Ohio tank factory  Published September 25, 2012
Associated Press    Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan warned Monday that more Americans could be put at risk overseas by the Obama's administration plan to halt production of tanks in Ohio for several years.

The White House has proposed suspending production at the nation's only tank manufacturing plant because the Pentagon says it will soon have enough tanks. Some members of Congress are attempting to restore funding for the tanks and other military weapons in a defense spending bill, a move the White House has threatened to veto.
About 800 workers refurbish the Abrams tanks in Lima, about 80 miles south of Toledo. Republicans in the state have been highly critical of plans affecting the plant and say they won't save the government money.

General Dynamics Corp.'s land systems unit, which operates the government-owned plant, estimates that the cost of shutting down the plant and then restarting it would be $1.6 billion while keeping it open with minimal production over four years would cost $1.4 billion. The Army puts the price of pausing production much lower -- around $400 million.
"We need peace through strength," Ryan told supporters during a rally in Lima. "We need a strong military."

Conservatives say we need to cut spending but DON"T TOUCH THE MILITARY which is one of our biggest money pits. Come on, how many freaking tanks do we need? Currently the US has over 9,000 Abrams. How many were lost in the gulf wars? Maybe a half a dozen. I think we could halt production for awhile and still be well protected.

I do not feel like it should be an either/or proposition.

Ironglow, I missed Guzzi's suggestion that we do the above. What kind of deflection/argument technique is yours called?

dukk,

I think you may be on to something.  A good means of saving money could be closing most of our overseas bases.    On the domestic policy side, cut public funding to Planned Parenthood, and make substantial cuts to the EPA, HUD, DOE [both of them], as well as major cuts to TANF and SNAP welfare programs.  If the freebies are reduced or eliminated, the parasites have to go get a job.

Mt thoughts are, the tank in warfare has about gone the way of the battleship, obsolescent technology. With the advent of handheld weapons capable of disabling/destroying a tank being in wide use, along with the current state of air power over battlefields, they have become more & more pointless. I thought this was pretty much proven when Saddams huge tank fleet wilted in the face of allied air power.

Agreed!............ Sending a tank out today to do battle, makes about as much sense as using a catapult.
The remaining ones would be more than enough to use against us, if we decide to go against a tyrannical government. :o The cost of one in 1999 was close to 5 million. The cost of one of the RPG's to destroy one would be in the hundreds, I would guess.

Good point.
Just like most home invasions are settled with only one shot being fired.
I guess I'll go unload 5 rounds from my nightstand revolver.
Because I only need one shot! ::)

how many do we need ? Interesting ? . How many will get hit and need repair ? how many places will we fight in at one time ? Could we streach a line from the gulf of Mexico to the Pafic and close off our borders to drug smuglers ? Does it hurt to have a few extra for the what ifs ?
Battleships retired , mothballed yep , useless maybe not they can be refloated and serviced if need be. Guess tanks could be in stock also.
