The Zenith Transoceanic.
« on: December 08, 2008, 07:13:01 PM »
This was one of the best Short Wave radios ever made ,Zenith was a leader in the consumer end of this going back to the 1930s.
1981 was the last year of the line ,some people still own and listen to a Transoceanic they bought in the 40s.
They would fold up into a nice well made box that had everything you would ever need to use this Receiver.
The case was aluminum and the antenna would fold out as high as six feet makeing it receive more stations than some base units in its time.

This is a 7000 , the one i have i bought in 1983 and i never have had to do anything to it except clean it off.
Zenith stopped building them because they were to labor intensive to produce in this form.
They were always built in the USA ,and the one i have cost me $137.40  , in a Navy PX.
One in excellent condition can run around $60.00 ,but they are fast becomeing a collectors item.
They are solid state , and some that are still NIB will be coming up for sale later next month from a place in Nevada where they were stored in a building all this time.

A Radio with all the features this one has today would be a Grundig costing over $ 300.00 or more.
Its a great receiver if you want to just listen and are cramped for space.
This is my Hammerlund ,XM-180 ,it was the Serous Short Wave Transceiver of its time ,1960 , it can take about any signal no matter how faint or static ridden and clear it up like it was next door.

This is a Hallicrafter  SX-122 ,it is the receiver portion of a set ,some Ham Radios were sold as sets , i also have the Transmitter to this Radio with consecutive ser. numbers.

Radios like this are only going up in price ,for the Hallicrafter set i was offered $5,000.00 from a Man in NJ.
So looking around sometimes you may want to keep this in mind ,Antique Radios have been becomeing a fad for the last 20 years.
It isn't unusual for someone to buy a Zenith black Dial for only 50 bucks then sell it for 1500.

+1 on the Zenith!

The older receivers are awsome when they work and would be great .  Personnaly, I'm looking for a Kenwood TR-820.
I would not recommend the antiques to someone just starting out though.  That being said, older models are fine and the ones that come to mind are the Kenwood 1000 or 2000, you starting to figure out that I'm a fan of the older Kenwoods?

Butler, i love the EH Scotts ,the chrome chassis and tube covers.
As far as starting out, a guy has to decide for himself where to start and what he wants to do,the main thing is to get people to start.
Im like you i love the kenwoods ,any Kenwood , they are great starters if someone is serious about this hobby.
I think their finals are the strongest and most forgiving of any thing out there.
The email i received about the Zenith 7000s for possible sale looks like they will go for $60.00 each if we bought all 12 of them.
They were held up in Probate from the death of a Man who owned an appliance mart.
I would want one , just to have it and the original box.

I never messed with a Collins before ,i like what i have heard about them , and i have seen this model before.

And some of the ones that look like a Hammerlund , and they are supposed to be equal in performance.

I just saw a transoceanic 600 on ebay for buy it now of $100.   They said it is clean, inside and out, still works, except for the cord retractor.  Does that sound about right.
Do you have any advice for a radio like this?  This would be my 1st SW radio.

Thats a little old lrs ,it had the push buttons that i am sure are having some problems now.
The last thing i want is for you to spend that kind of money for what is a collector price.
Its a good price ,but not for being your first short wave.

Oceanic's are great radios ,but i think they got even better when they went transistor.
That would be the 1000 ,3000 ,7000 ,but the 1000 i think is also a little old to be fooling with as what you want.
There are expensive ICOM and kenwood portables , and dont get me wrong i love them

But the China made portables that you get today for under $300.00 are just that ,China made.
Radio Shack used to sell a Realistic radio that was made for them by Grundig ,it was a real ood one at 200 bucks for the same radio that a Grundig was at 600.

They don't sell it any longer ,and some people buy a Short wave at wal mart and think they have something for $79.95.
Then they realize they cant even pick up anything real over 500 miles.
Thats why i like the Zenith.

Let me contact one of the guys in my club and see if he will part with something , i mean im on this board, im not going to steer you wrong.
It sounds like you want to listen at first , then like i said a Transceiver from around the 1980s would be a good one for you.
you could then move into transmitting and if you liked it move up from there.
I have six of them in boxes let me look there also ,but your going to need a power supply also.
I think i have a couple of Motorola's there .

I have about 6 or so Transoceanics. All are from the 40's to early 50's models, with one 7000 series. I have a nice 51 model that is near mint, and I use a battery eliminator box that allows use of standard D-cells. These radios are unmatched, in my opinion, on receive and audio when they are tuned and aligned proper.

Nice to see this "sideline" forum alongside the gun forums. Firearms and radios are my vices for sure..always have been.

I just found this forum. Back in the early 70's bought a zenith trans oceananic for my dad. Been sitting in the sun room for about 15 years. Now you got me. Guess I'll have to break it out and give it a try. Just goes to show you that nothing really goes out of style. Thanks, Frank

I could have written that - back in 1971, I bought my Dad a Transoceanic for his birthday. He had a 32Ft Chris Craft, and that radio became a permanent fixture on that boat. About 5 years ago, he gave it back to me. "Cleaning house", he said. Now, every time I go to see him, he loads my truck up with whatever he has decided he doesn't need anymore and I would just have to have. He's 82 and has never come to grips with being a senior citizen. Now I'm one of them... LOL!

Sweetwater, Dad passed away some years back and one of the few things I have of his is the zenith transoceanic royal 7000-1. Found it last night after posting my message here. Ah senior citizens, you gotta love them. Me I'm 63 so I qualify in spades. used to have a hammerlund HQ110 that a ham radio friend of mine gave me. Worked great until one day something went poof and died. Took it to a tv and radio shop and was tole it would cost more to have it fixed than it was worth. Frank

I see a few of these Zenith TOs on e-bay, etc. and wonder, just what (a new to this) I should check or look out for if considering one?

if you are shopping on ebay, just make sure you have a reputable seller with 100% (or dang near that) feedback. I'd buy one already working good, or restored. But, restoration can mess one up also..even if it still is "working".

I have several of the old TO's from the 40's and 50's. They all work, and I even have a battery eliminator that I can use modern batteries with for portable use. It's so fun to have it along on a trip or vacation.

I just picked up 2 Zenith model 5G401's and another Motorola portable. Paid 35 total for all 3 and they work great! Here is a pic of what these model 5G401 looks like (these are not mine, but a pic I found online of the same unit):
