(WHAS11) -- Mollie Shouse was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Wednesday after a jury found her guilty in August of murder. She was convicted of leaving her two-year-old son, Kenton Brown, in a hot car outside her Lyndon apartment in May of 2011.
Shouse’s attorney argued that her sentence be reduced to 20 years. It was denied despite a plea from her mother.
“She's a good person. I have such a hole in my heart. I will never heal without her,” said Susan Boyd.
Assistant Commonwealth Prosecutor Erin Mckenzie argued that 35 years is fair.
“The little boy who will never again be able to wonder where his mommy is, to look for her to come pick him up. The little boy who sat in his car seat and suffered for hours upon hours,” said Mckenzie.
Prosecutors said Shouse got high and passed out. Judge Olu Stevens said she showed a lack of remorse.
“Miss Shouse you chose the drugs over the life of your child,” said Stevens.
Stevens imposed the jury’s recommended 35 year sentence.
“It was written all over her that she was sorry for herself,” said Mckenzie.
