What can you squeeze out of this round with a 200 gr bullet in a 16" plus barrel?

See my posts in Handloading section. I have not tried the 200grain in it yet. With 180 grain XTPs I was able to get over 2100fps, still below the max load. That is with a 24 inch TC custom shop barrel.

220 gr cast + IMR4198 + 18" barrel = 1800 fps

Neutron - I am having the same barrel made up for me from VVCG in the same length. You shoot any cast bullets in yours?

I don't use cast bullets in the Maximums that I have and I don't use bullets heavier than 180 grains. From my 14 inch contender I get 1800+ fps and from my 24 inch carbine I get 1900 fps. I use the Speer rifle bullet that was designed for the 35 Remington so it works well at these velocities and gives superb terminal performance. There is also a Hornady bullet that I haven't tried yet and it should give a few more yards of effective range.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Paul thanks.......I won't see my barrel for a few months by then I will lookin for some good loading info. My plan is to shoot it as a Max for awhile...use up some old components from my magnum days then maybe have it rechambered for a little more poop.

I want to shoot it as a max for awhile because I have so much in the way of components but then I was thinking of a rechamber to .358 ***** (.358 x .444 ) basically a 444 Marlin necked to .358. My goal is to make it a short range elk gun as that is about the only BG animal I have never harvested with a Contender.
