Muzzle Reduction-460 S&W 15"-12"
« on: October 21, 2012, 03:55:16 PM »
A quick question, as ballistics has not always been my strong suit. I am getting a JP Muzzle brake installed on my 460 S&W over the next week on my Encore. It is a beast to shoot. As of now I am seriously considering having a 3" reduction form 15" down to 12". The thing seem so long, I feel like I should just be packing a rifle. In a nutshell how will that affect my overall performance of the round?

The muzzle blast will probably be more and probably more recoil since you are loosing a lot of barrel weight.  I haven't chroneyed those bullets, but looking at some of the various loads done on the ballisticsbytheinch webpage, I am guessing less than 100 fps.  I looked at the 45 colt and 44mag.  Most of the pistol cartridges gain very little velocity after about 12" anyway, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks Rosewood. I can't wait to get the barrel back. I've had it about a year and have shoot less that 20 rounds in it. I also just ordered .223 barrel, for groundhogs and other varmints,  plus it's a little cheaper and more pleasant shoot.

I have the 15" .223 barrel in the encore.  Love shooting it.  Picked up a 14" .223 for my contender and now I shoot it and have the encore bbl up for sale.  The .223 has got to be the most fun to shoot and it is easily sub-moa.  Mine likes the light 45 grain bullets.  I hand load myself.
