10 ga Slug Gun
« on: September 26, 2012, 11:03:48 AM »
Hi All,

No pics, yet, but I just picked up my new (to me) "NL" vintage 10ga, 3.5" 24" barrel with screw in turkey choke.  The stock set is black so I guess this is a topper?

Now what?  SInce I gave up turkey huntin' I think this will make a nice deer slug gun. ::)   All  my reloading stuff i need arrived today accept for the 1 11/16 oz. soft lead slugs I am planning on using.  The Slugs are due in tomorrow's mail. 8)   Going to remove the scout mounted Red dot and d/t for a scope rail and install a 4x simmons shotgun scope.  I have a "cylinder" choke tube on the way so for now it stays at 24" but I really do love my shorties so I can see a stubby 10ga in my future! ;)

I have a design going to build an attached wad slug that weighs approx. 1100 grains (2.5oz). :o   GOing to to play with the lightweight 1 11/16 oz slugs for now and see how my shoulder and forehead make out. ;D

More to follow, first range adventure is planned for Friday AM.

Keep us posted! This sounds like a cool project.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

where did you get your choke tube?

On Gunbroker.  It took a bunch of searching to find a Cylinder choke, 0.775".  If I am lucky the bore will also be 0.775" ::) .  With my tendancy to shorten barrels both the tubes will probably make their way to classifieds at some point.

Gonna start loadin' 10ga slugs first thing in the morning.  Starting with some 1.25 oz ones and working my way up to the 1 11/16 oz slugs.  Gotta think abit more about the 2.5 oz ones, maybe spend sometime with the old recoil calculator. ;D

Well I survived my first range trip with 25 of my handloaded 10ga attached wad slugs.  I now know how to build a slug that mimics perfectly a football's motion on kickoff. :P  My slug design had a weak point that became very apparent once I had pulled the trigger a couple of times.  The lead part of my Profino attached wad slug was shifting rearward in the plastic sleeve upon shooting and with the center of gravity going reward my shuttle cock type slug was no longer stable.  I think I know how to fix the problem and will try again next week with version 2.0.

FWIW, so far the recoil of this gun is not even close to what my 45-120 can dish out.  However, my heaviest slugs to date are only 1.75 oz and I reserve the right to change my opinion once I launch some of the 2.5 oz slugs. :o ::) ;D

Once i get these slugs figured out and work up an accurate load I am going to take a couple of pop-shots and the Pure Michigan Fly Fisherman. >:(

Ben,

I am not Mr. Bronson, no death wish here! ::)   My current loads are basically duplicating the ballastics of the 1 3/4 oz federal foster slugs.  With my 9 pound gun, recoil calculator says about 45 ft lbs.  I shot 25 of these loads on Friday and no recoil induced injury, of course I didn't shoot them from a bench rest. ;D

Now if IF I go to the 2.5 oz slug and max out the velocity, around 1200 fps, and I make a shorty and remove the stock weight (thinkin' about it ??? ) this 7 pound gun would now generate > 100 ft lbs. :o   My hottest loads to date in the 45-120 haven't exceeded 60 ft lbs, so I kinda think the 10ga is gonna stay at 9 pounds and the 2.5 oz slug may stay on the drawing board. ;)

Ben,

the 10 ga slug hasn't killed me after 55 shots in the last 7 days. :o   I have reached my recoil limit and it is 67 ft - pounds.  2 oz Profino Custom Slug, lots of Blue dot = 1,380 FPS in a 9 pound gun.  :P   Actually the gun is much more pleasant to shoot than my 45-120, but like Inspector Callahan said "man has got to know his limitations".  I have formally scraped my plans for the 2.5 oz Profino slug and the gun is going to remain unaltered.  No 7 pound 10 ga shorty in my future. :'(   Taking a break from this project for a bit to chase bambi with a crossbow.  Plan to do some serious accuracy testing in a couple of weeks.  I did have two  holes touching at 50 yards today with my last two rounds, which is almost as good as some of my better one-hole groups. ;) ;D

This gun is completely black, furniture, metal and optics so I am thinking of naming it "BLack Death".  Anybody else care to suggest a name?

Black Death sounds like a good'un.  My surgery is tomorrow am, and I will be glad to get it done, but it will forever limit my recoil tolerance.  I'm going to a 410, and a 223 for deer.  I'm saving my 45-70 however because I'm emotionally attached.... :D

My recoil limit is severly limited, and I will miss the big stuff, I've always been a big bore freak.

Enjoy it, and unless you enjoy rump roast, be careful where you shoot bambi with it!
