Some Alaska grouse.
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:36:33 PM »
I never managed to get my youngest out for moose this year and weather has been so bad we haven't got out much for anything.  This Saturday was looking good.  I am breaking in a new prop lower unit on my Hewescraft after taking off the jet unit.  We need to put 10 hours of light duty variable speeds on it.  Perfect for cruising the lake shores looking for ducks and grouse.  We have had some stiff NW winds and that sent most of the ducks south. We wandered around the lake and finally decided to sneak up to a nearby pond to look for ducks.  No ducks but my son flushed a grouse - spruce hens here. My oldest got a .22 Benjamin "Nitro" pellet rifle this summer for hunting grouse closer to town and he was eager to try it out.  My younger son, Emmett  (11), is a bit more timid on guns and has only now decided he wants to carry the 20 ga. We started walking the woods where the first grouse flushed and quickly flushed more. We chased them back into the trees where E managed to whack a bird out of the brush with the 20.  The pellet rifle required very careful shot placement to be effective.  A couple were head shot and one was wounded then finished w the 20 while it ran around under the brush.  I managed to get one w my 22 pistol and another w the 12 ga as it was screened in a thick spruce tree.  Wing shooting would probably be a lot more sporting but I'm not quick enough and the brush is so thick its darned hard to see or swing on flying birds.  So the bush Alaska style is to sluice them while they sit.  We ended up w 8 birds and an enjoyable 2 hours of prowling the brush.  The boat ran well, the sun was out and we had a great time.  Its getting cold fast now. Was 22 degrees that morning.

Looks like a fine hunt, and some tasty grouse for the table! Good to see the young guys out hunting, as they grow you'll need the extra food...I know my boys can pack it away! We will hunting ruffed grouse this weekend in the Upper Peninsula's Hiawatha National Forest, hope we do as well as you guys.  Scott B.

Sounds like a fun day!

You know I never could taste any difference between "ground" birds and "air" birds!
