Connecticut man kills masked teenager, finds out it's his son  Published September 27, 2012
Associated Press    NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. –  Connecticut police say a man has fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defense outside his neighbor's house during what appeared to be an attempted burglary and then discovered it was his son.
 
Troopers say 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano was killed by his dad around 1 a.m. Thursday in New Fairfield, a town of about 15,000 residents in the New York metropolitan area.
Authorities say a woman in the house believed someone was breaking in and called the teen's father, who lives next door. The father grabbed a gun.
 
Troopers say the father confronted the teen, who was wearing a ski mask and black clothing. They say the father fired his gun when the teen went at him with a weapon.
The father, Jeffrey Giuliano, hasn't returned a message seeking comment.
No charges have been filed.

I can understand the dad not recognizing his son if he was wearing a ski mask but why would the son come at his dad with a knife?  Something strange going on there.  Like to see the tox screen results on the boy.

It boils down to if you believe the Dad's story that the kid came at him with a knife.  Darkness, fear, adrenaline and a finger on the trigger makes for a tricky situation. A sad situation where the consequences will be hard to accept.

My heart goes out to all concerned in the OP, the Dad will never forgive himself.
 
I worked in a liquor store for 8 years and saw a lot of things that could have gone bad in a hurry. One night as I locked up a guy stepped out from behind my truck and came rt at me. I was starting to squeeze the trigger when he turned and ran, never saw him before, this was around midnite.
 
Just a few miles away 2 liquor stores were robbed by men in ski masks the week before. I was alone behind the counter when the door flew open, this was winter and snowy and very cold, 2 guys came through the dr wearing ski masks. I pulled my 45 from under the counter and was about to fire as they stopped dead and I noticed that in his gloved hand was money. You'd be amazed what all the mind  can take in in a few seconds. I of course knew them both and told them NEVER do that again, they didn't. POWDERMAN.

As to walking into a liquor store wearing a ski mask... this is proof once again that common sence is not common and you can't fix stupid.
