Just a note-- I am a gunsmith and never refuse to work on a gun because I find it not cool but the 740-742's wear out. Some do so with very low round counts. The bolt head operating cam wears out..just that simple. The biggest thing I can say use grease on the operating cams. High pressure type wheel bearing kind is what you need..the impact of thatcam will pound right thru oil..if the oil actually stays put long enough to help at all. As the wear progresses the locking lugs begin notching the action slide rails inside the action. Its called printing and its fatal to the rifle at least as an autoloader. They can be used before total failure as straight pull bolt or they can be converted to pumps with a fairly intricate rework.. Gun shops judge a gun on profit versus PITA, the 742's are not welcomed by most shops.. Don't know much about the newer models but have seen a few with very similar problems..buyer beware!! The pumps are ok..Just that simple! Brownings never seem to have problems. I own a browning and several pumps (760's) but have several 742's in the shop..gifts from folks that that had problems and I had to tell were not fixable. One belongs to a good friend. It may become a pump..
