357 Max on SB! reciever
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:19:20 AM »
Last year I purchased a Handi in the 357 Mag trapper model with the 18.5" barrel.  The barrel is marked SB2 but the reciever is the solid cast SB1 style.  I am wanting to ream the barrel to 357 Max but when I realized the reciever is a SB1 it made me question whether the reciever can handle the 357 Max.  I have read several different opinions about this but can anyone shed some light.  I know the SB1's are factory fitted for 44 Mag which list at 40,000 CUP and the SAAMI standard for 357 Max is 48,000 if I have my info right.  However, I read a post where someone loaded 357 Max rounds using 26.5grs AA1680 with 180gr Hornady ammo and the AA manual list the presssure at 41,000 CUP.  I also read that the "SB1 would handle the 357 Max round at 48,000 CUP because the breech thrust on the 357 Max is still less than the 44 Mag"?  Im new to reloading and plan to be very careful if I do go the 357 Max route.
So what im wanting to know is how much pressure can a SB1 take?  Im sure someone on this site has pushed the limits, not that im going to, but I am curious about what others have done.
And a side note for anyone shooting factory ammo out of the 18.5" 357 Mag barrel.  I tried some of the Federal Fusion ammo and the stuff shot 3/4", 3 shot groups at 75yds!

First off, many of the 357 mags become Maxi barrels on the SB1 recievers. But it is not recommeded,  Read thru the FAQ There is lots of info in there are the Maximum. Plus do a search thru the forums lots and lots of post on the topic.

Lonny,

I disagree.  The SB1 receiver is plenty strong to handle the Maxi as long as proven load data is followed.  I have shot the one I had all the way up to max loads.  Some guys are loading 1680 way over max (27-29 grs).  I wouldn't recommend doing that on a SB1, but I do believe it could handle it.

Way back we did get some info from IMR and they said they stopped load development of 1680 at around 26-26.5 (can't remember which one is max) because of case volume not pressure. (That's with a 180 gr xtp)

Both of ours are on SB2 frames.  Needed?  I doubt it, even with pretty stout loads.  I did it for other reasons such as being able to change to higher pressure barrels etc. without possible confusion and disaster.  I believe the extra fifty bucks spent for a SB2 is just cheap insurance.  All my Handis, including all the pistol calibers are on SB2s, but that's just my own quirk.  As Bobby and Tim said, you're good to go as long as you don't go nuts with it.

Rev and Quik I agree it can and has been done. I myself have pushed it on an SB1.

He stated "Im new to reloading and plan to be very careful if I do go the 357 Max route."
So I guess I was just being politcally correct( :-[ ). Thanks for correcting me. I will now return to reader, greeter status ;)

Accurate's latest data for the SSPB in a T/C 10" is a starting load of 27.0grs and max at 30.0grs.  I have a 357 Max SB1 and have shot up to 28.0grs of 1680 without any problems, although accuracy is awful.  Mine shoots much better at 27.2grs.

If you're going to shoot the 357 Max study Steve's website as well as the FAQ here.  At first I was concerned about the SB1 too, but if you use AA1680 it's like Lil Gun in a 22 Hornet.  You would have to make a concerted effort to compact enough powder in the case for it to become a problem.
