The other day, a neighbor and I followed vultures out back on my place and found a dead fork horn buck. Tall spikes with a small "V" at the top. It looked like it had a bullet entry hole in the chest, but no blood. It was a mess with the body cavity and rump opened up, so we didn't turn it over. The next day I stopped at U.P. Feeds in Newberry and was chatting with the guy behind the counter. I told him about the buck and he came back with "That's got to be my kid's deer.". He described the deer his kid shot at with a .30-30 Sunday afternoon during the Youth Hunt. They were hunting about a half mile west. He came over after work and checked it out. It was pretty well cleaned up and he turned it over. The kid was trying for a shoulder shot and hit the right chest and it exited behind the left shoulder. The head was pretty much intact, so he cut it off and is doing a European mount for the kid.
