Factory Scope Base??
« on: October 15, 2012, 02:59:41 AM »
Picked up a used barrel sight unseen.  Relied on the seller’s description as the barrel being unmolested with a factory installed scope base.  Pictures are of the barrel as received in the mail.

Does this look like any factory installed scope base any of you guys have ever seen?  Supposedly came this way on a new rifle.

I’ve only been messing with guns for about 45 years so I know I have not seen everything and still have a lot to learn, but this looks like a very “molested” Weaver 82 base to me and I for one certainly would not buy a NEW rifle that had this base on it.

Opinions?

I dont see the telltale 'flat' at the breech end of the W-82 like mine.

Most of the people are honest and do the right thing, but there are a few that you have to be carefull with. I have purchased 4 barrels (not all from GBO classified)that had been reamed by hand, 2 were fine and 2 were reamed  so the chamber is egg shaped near the rear bottom. One was a 357 max, I reamed that to a 44/357 to correct the chamber the other is a 454 that is so bad I only fired it 3 times with med. loads and was worried about splitting a case. Like I said most people are great to deal with.
Looks like a Weaver base cut off and drilled. Not a bad job of doing it ,but molested yes,

You will notice that the breech end is cut off so probably does not look like your W-82 base.  The 82 stamped on the base is also a bit of a clue.

I'll wager the barrel is just fine. It Looks to me like the previous owner cut off the flat and re drilled holes thru base to alight with factory holes. This IS the complaint about this base.

The  Weaver #82 base is just fine, especially if modified like this. So IMHO it is even better!! ::)

I was the person who sold this barrel.  Plain and simple, I goofed.  I must have changed the mount out at some point, and CRS kicked in.  I took the barrel off of the 444 and laid it on my bench and looked at it briefly.  Did not pick up that the mount wasn't correct.  I had done a few of the 82 Weavers like this, years ago.  I must have put one on the 444 for whatever reason, I can't recall.  I have the correct mount going to rusty reel tomorrow.  Public apology, I was wrong.  Didn't mean to lead him astray, if I'd been smart enough I'd have fixed the situation before it left my house.  Danny

KUDO's for the honesty my friend, this is big in my book!

Like I said in my post, IMHO you IMPROVED the Weaver 82 base. ;)

I'd prefer a factory base given a choice, but I have both and my W-82 works fine and its not modified, though on a light recoil caliber.
Goodonya Geezer for rectifying this!........this certainly underscores that it is always worth talkin' first if dissatisfied or even unsure.
