Love/Hate relationship w/hogs
« on: July 05, 2012, 07:00:42 AM »
For 20 prior years (1990-2010) I harvested hogs.  A lot of hogs.  Probably over 500 myself and that doesn't count the hundreds by Guests and Family.  I got used to my hunting land being routinely "destroyed"; some places being unsuitable to drive the tractor for fear of breaking an axle on the "land mined" earth; the abundant opportunity to shoot; the additional meat in the freezer; the reduction in the number of deer that frequented the property - thinking it was the hogs (and Poachers) that had run them off.

After the recent 2.5 years of Professional "Hog Trapping" (and other game mismanagement - or so I believe) on the adjoining 4,000-acres of State owned land, I have no hogs to shoot and the the number of deer and bobcats that used to frequent my property has, by observation and Trail Camera evidence, decreased.  I am not shooting them and got ZERO (deer) and two hogs for ALL of last season/year (hogs are 24/7/365 in FL - and I hunt them HARD).

Coyotes (3 - 1 of which look pregnant on camera), bear (1), and a white Shetland Pony (that looks like a Unicorn) have been tagged as "on the rise" by the game cameras.  Poachers have been absent too, unless they are just frequenting the State's Property in other locations, the cumulative impact of which being a noticable drop in deer frequenting my land.

I find that I am truly saddened by the loss of hog shooting opportunities, something I thought I would be glad about, if it ever happened.  It is akin, I think, to the loss of a limb and the "ghost pain" of an itch that can no longer be scratched.

I believe that once (if) the Professional "Hog Trappers" are disbanded by the State, that the hogs will eventually increase in numbers that will overrun the available space (like it used to be).  I find that I am looking forward to this.

How should I go about confronting the State's Land Managers with the empirical information gathered about the game "losses" (deer) I am experiencing on my land?  I had a Guest that took photos of the Hog Trapper's trap and shooting stands on the State's property.  Nothing wrong with us wandering around over there as it is open to the Public for this purpose, except the parking area for the Public is 7 miles further south.  I don't expect to see John Q. Public walking near my land, but there is no impediment to me or my Guest to walk over there (unarmed).

The Trapper's "Hog stands" overlook 300-yard roadway crossings that all game frequent.  If there is no one from the State to oversee the Trappers on a "routine basis", who is to stop the Trappers and their assistants from killing all of the State Land game regardless of their contract's provisions?  Changing the Trapper every other year only changes the name on the State contract as the one of the assistant's becomes the "new boss".

I asked the State after Trapper-Year 2, via email (8 mo. ago), to look at the trap and stand photos, gave them GPS coordinates, and got an email in return.  They asked the Trapper, who confirmed they are his and that he states he isn't taking any game besides hogs.  I guess that makes it true because he said it and the State believes it.  My Guest didn't mess with anything over there.  It didn't belong to him and I don't want trouble from them.

any chance you could meet with the local fish and game folks on your property and possibly get a idea of why there are no deer? how far from your particular property are there good deer populations at the moment? id imagine you wont get any help from fish and game with your lack of hogs but they may be able to shine some light on the deer thing. its seems a mystery to me, i know yu have managed your land for deer in the past i would think they would come back rather quickly once the hogs were gone. i live almost entirely on wild game so i certainly feel your pain.

Hey Land Owner, I have similar feelings re: hogs. Our numbers dropped considerably the past couple of years, but I believe the reason is simple here, severe drought, followed by forrest fires last summer and now loggers destroying everything to remove the standing dead timber.  I am seeing boat loads of hog tracks now that the loggers have left.  Have you checked to see what other variables might exist to explain the reduction in deer?  Any cases of anthrax? Any other changes?  Where exactly is your place located?  There could be an explanation other than the trappers next door. I suppose anything is possible but if they were reducing that many deer on state lands, could they get away with it? Would anyone from the state be aware of what they are doing?

I know what you are saying. I went hunting with hogpredators.com in South Georgia and had a really nice time and took several hogs the first night and several more the second.  At least Georgia has changed their laws on night hunting hogs since they are doing such devastating crop damage and damage to landowners property.  I was glad to kill a few and help the farmer out.
I would highly recommend hogpredators.com to everybody.

Things change.  Two months ago was apparently the end of a long dry spell of no hogs and no deer.  Now there are 11 hogs tearing up the land and not less than a dozen deer (including 3 nice bucks) enjoying the 5-acres of Iron and Clay peas there.  The coyotes remain at 2 and both the pony and bear have wandered off to parts unknown.

If it stops raining, we will plant some Throw and Grow as well as clover to keep the deer interested throughout the season, as they will eventually devastate the 5-acres of peas.  Maybe this season we might take a deer or two, which would be good.

well glad to hear things looking up for yu with the deer. is it possible if the hogs were kept controlled by shooting to a certain amount of hogs per section that you could have both hogs and deer?i can see where it would be hard to do if yu did not own a large piece of land to manage as yu see fit.
i do like a dab of pork to grind with my venison burger!

Those coyotes are likely to have something to do with your lack of deer.  On a several hundred acre tract I hunt, I found three fawn carcasses in just a walk about.  Coyote sign everywhere, hardly any deer.

Game cams are picking up NO deer on another tract, even near a feeder.  I put out some Old Roy near the cam, and the coyotes came enmasse after about 3 days.

Plz explain "Old Roy" and I will look into it.  We sit...and sit...and sit...and sit for days upon weeks upon months and NEVER see Yotes in daylight.

Wouldn't it be wonderfull if all evasive species would just die off then we  could hunt what grate-grate-grate-gandpaw hunted. The best would be no hogs in my yard.
