Anyone use a Boat Horn to scare off a bear?
« on: October 10, 2012, 08:04:15 AM »
I read of people using warning shots, or pepper spray to scare off bears. I was wondering if a small boat horn ( the really loud succkers) has been used by anyone? Seems to me it would beat hollering or wasting a round of ammo?

Interesting question!
In fact a good old loud hunting horn ( if you know how to blow it) might also cause the bear to give a second thought about being aggressive!

I grew up using "blowing horns" (cow horns) for calling deer hounds, etc. I'm afraid the pucker factor with a bear would have me just making a "pfffffffffffft" sound ,ha.

Seems like it might work, unless its one of those costal Alaskan bears that associate a boat horn with a salmon dinner.....

Ha, I don't even do much boating, much less see any bears while out there! I'm thinking it would work on black bears in camp, etc, or in other areas. I'm sure it could be iffy around any coastal bears near the water who have heard one. But right in your face, I know it would startle me anyhow, ha.
