Was at the Dundee, MI Cabelas this morning and was looking to see if they had any used Handis.  They did, but the selection was kinda limited, (2) 45-70 BC and at least 6 35 Whelans with camo syn. stocks.  The Whelans were all priced at $229 and marked previously owned.  Why couldn't they have been 35 Remingtons!?!?! :'(

I bought one of those whelens from Cabelas last year . The one I got was wood for $209 . I don't know how true it was but the guy that sold me the rifle said they got a bunch of re-manufactured guns right from H&R. The whelen shoots real good I'm very happy with the $209 special. I'm hoping to kill a buck with it this season.

I get to the Cabelas in Kansas City every once in a while - seldom see any Handis there either - you mention seeing several similar rifles in the used section - I noticed several times at KC that they always seem to have multiple CZ rifles and shotguns (their headquarters for the US is in KC).  I mentioned it to one of the guys working the gun counter and he told me that they get a lot of guns from CZ that are customer returns - they run them through the service shop and Cabelas ends up with them as used guns.  I was at the Cabelas in Wichita the other day and they had a bunch of Marlin 336 in laminated stocks marked used - I wonder if Cabelas got a similar deal on the Handis and Marlins from Remington.... What were they getting for the Whelens? The Marlin price was pretty good....

If you have a Cabelas near you, you might ask to see if they would transfer one to your store......

i tried to ask one of the salespeople
when i was there 2 weeks ago about
any new ones, and i couldn't get any
help. they were too "busy" and i guess
me looking like a dirtbag biker/redneck
doesn't help, but i did have cash and
a credit card on me.
working at car dealers for so long taught
me not to take folks at face value. a lot
of old sweat-stinky farmers would come
in with overall bib pockets of cash and
pay cash out the door for a new truck.

Thats a great price for those. Walmart has them for $279 new around here near Baton Rouge. I bought mine for $260 total and it was a used one before they had any around here.
I just found a 35Rem/444 combo so I'm selling off my 35 Whelen barrel but it was a good shooting gun. Just don't need that much power for whitetails and I'll be loading Super 35 loads in the 35R. Easier on the shoulder as well. My buddy got the 444 part.
You can get Cabelas to ship it to the store near you.

Hunter6657:  That Whelen can be downloaded to a very light recoiling gun for kids.  I use Pistol bullets and Trail Boss powder to down load it for girls in my shooting classes.  So don't say the Whelen has too much power.  Yet is can be loaded to almost match factory .338 Win Mag loads.  The .35 Whelen is an extreamely versitile cartridge.

  No doubt caused by many of the reported .35 whelen problems.  That's of course just an assumption based on internet rhetoric, and the high number they had available.  Could also be one of those people where somebody tells them to get a .35 whelen because it's so great, they grab a box of hornady leverevolution and after a few shots decide it's too much shoulder bruising power for them.
     Given it can be loaded down, anything can really but re-loaders are a minority.  In fact off-hand myself included I don't know anybody who re-loads.  I used too for my .303 British but I finally got the local shop stocking factory ammo for it.  Seen more than a few .300 WSM, and Rem 7 mag used as well simply for being so hard on scopes, and shoulders in general.  Most people rate my .30-06 heavy on the recoil side. 


      Wish we had a Cabela's around here.  I would snatch up a .35 whelen for $209 in a heartbeat.
