Has anyone purchased or hunted with a cross bow yet?  I am not looking for a big crossbow archery debate.  I am simply looking to hear any stories or recommendations for equipment.  I have been looking online and think I may want one

I have been looking also. I live in Wisconsin and the state is moving closer to a crossbow season. These look the most interesting to me.

I purchased one a while ago, thought it would be fun to shoot. It is a Barnett and rated at 345 FPS. I was rather disappointed. There is a lot of hype about how deadly they are, easy to shoot and hit the bull and of course fast. In a word NOT!! It is very heavy, not any faster than my compound (rated at 315 fps.) and I can get better consistency out of my compound. I wanted to try and hunt with it this year in our very limited season but was recovering from a shoulder operation so it did not work out. I would suggest you go to a store were you can shoot  some  and see if you find one  that you like.  Maybe I just need to use it more to get used to it.

if you have a ar rifle, there is one that attaches to a ar lower. kinda pricy tho if i remember rite.

bubba - You might want to wait a bit.  From what I understand, crossbows are not permanently allowed in NYS.  The section of the law allowing crossbows to be used in NY for hunting, are due to expire at the end of the year unless renewed.  I could be wrong, but that's what I read recently.

I think by next year the crossbow will be allowed in the archery season.
 
DEC wants it and so does the Governor.
 
But I would wait and see also.
 
A friend bought a cheap one and he is very disappointed. Broke first time out, parts hard to find, and it seems dangerous to him.

I've had one for about 20 years, hardly used and certainly never for hunting. I sold it today. ;D

had one for several years now.
good thing for me when the
weather is crappy and have to
hunt in a blind.
too hard to draw my bow inside a blind.
only dislike so far is the red-dot,
which i've learned to hate.
fixing that soon.


it's another option if you have the
extra bucks to lay out.
but! ! ! !
you still need to practice, just like
everything else.
no free rides.
