My 4 year old handi will not fire
« on: October 17, 2012, 03:38:10 PM »
I just went to the range to check my 444 handi, it snapped once then fired, second round
Snapped twice before firing. Is this the transfer bar problem I've read about? Our primitive weapon
Season starts in 3 days I am in a bind what can I do? I can't hunt with this one.

bad ammo?
dirty chamber?
mung in the firing pin hole?

open it up and ease the hammer down
to the fired position while holding the
trigger. is the pin poking out like it should?

mung and trash inside the action? :-\

I compared it to my sons identical rifle. It all looks the same, the firing pins extend out about the
Same. If the transfer bar were broken would it fire sometime and not others. The ammo shoots fine in my sons gun. It has had about a hundred rounds shot through it and does not look gummed up.

Probably the transfer bar or the firing pin.  Try a magnet on the end of the firing pin to see if it will pull-out of the pin hole.  If not, firing pins can break in different places and the end may not pull out with the magnet so you will need to remove the pin to inspect it.

Also the spent primer of the fired shell should show a smooth rounded indention.  If not the end of the firing pin could be btoken off and cause a fail to fire.

If it extends the same distance, it may be gummed with something that is slowing the velocity of the firing pin.  Put your thumb over the firing pin hole and dry fire one time.  Do the same with your sons rifle.  If they feel the same (and you are gonna feel this) buy new ammo.

OUCH...  ::)   Keith...

It does sound like a transfer bar...
Quick question,  are you pulling the trigger completely and entirely to the rear?

If you are used to a fine bolt trigger, where the trigger breaks like a glass rod with little to no movement... The handi cannot work this way. ;)

I held the trigger down against the back of the trigger guard, and still FTF. The boys gun shots when I
Pull the trigger.

Sorry to say it sounds like the T-bar issue (if you do a search you will find some good pics of the 'bad' one as a visual reference). Typical scenario is what you are getting and if you inspect the primer after the first non-ignition blow it will show a light impression. The hammer fall pinches the T-bar out like a watermellon seed under your thumb. I think your rifle falls into the right age for a bad rash of T-bar failures, too.
Brian at H&R may be able to help even on this short notice if you can replace the parts yourself.

My money is on it being a T bar issue.  Just change it out, while your at it, check the firing pin, and clean the firing pin channel.

I'd clean it real good first, then check it.  If that cures it good.  If not order the new transfer bar.  It sure would help if you had a priming tool and could check without going to the range.  At this late date you may have to share a gun with your son, or find an alternate gun.  That is why I always carry a spare when I go out.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Mine did the same thing, it was the T-bar. Easy to change out, like Sourdough said I would take it apart and give it a good cleaning and see if that works, especially on the short time frame that you have.

I spoke with a guy at H&R toady and decried the problem, he suggested
Is end it in and they would go through it and send it back. I have a back up gun
So I can wait for a pro fix and trigger job.
