Need Suggestions for 7.62x54r
« on: October 11, 2012, 04:46:20 PM »
I have been reloading for a long time, but have not used cast bullets in a rifle before and am looking for some advice. I am looking for a heavy 180-220gr gc check bullet for the 7.62x54r. I am going to use this as a Hog round. Most of my shots are within 50 yards. What would you suggest to a person who does not yet cast their own.

thanks

For starters maybe just buy some commercial cast bullets. Lots of sources, if you google it or ask around for a recommendation. Heavy for caliber is the way to go. If it's a plain jane Russian 91/30 you will need a good fat bullet, at least .314 is my guess. If you get serious about using home cast bullets (they're great) consider having a custom mold made up to fit your gun. I've shot the big Russian 7.62 in some matches, using cbs. Lots of fun. There's guys shooting very small groups this way out to 200 yds. You're on the right track to having fun. Once you have a good mold you're set for life.

the Lyman 314299 or the Lee bullet for the 303 Brit shoots well.Cast them out of wheelweight and drive them between 1600-1800 and it should work fine. The Lee .314 push through sizing kit(with their alox)  will work very well.
