New to me 760
« on: January 13, 2012, 12:28:20 PM »
I just picked up a 760 Gamemaster in 35 Rem.  It has only had 4 rounds down the barrel and is in 99% condition.
How can I tell which year it was made??
Is there any collector value to this??   My original plans were to make it a 35 Whelen.  After looking at it and the condition of it, I might leave it alone.

you have a fine rifle and i agree with the above post.....i'd leave it alone. These rifles are very accurate and you'll flatten a deer or pig out to 200 yds. That's farther away than most of us should be shootin at game anyway. mike

Caliber/Gauge:I wouldn't change it as the 35 Rem 760's are now a desirable rig. I don't know how much you paid for it but if you want a 35 Whelen there's a guy in Oregon that rebores and rechambers 760's to 35 Whelen for a decent price. He usually has rifles on Gun Broker.
With the Hornady 200gr FTX bullets the 35 Rem cartridge has moved up a bit in ability.

With a B72... S/N it looks like a 1980 model.
I doubt I'll ever hunt with it.  I have enough other guns to hunt with.  I only get 1-4 tags a year.
If I limited myself to 200 yds I might go hungary.  Since I got a range finder my shots have been from 56 yds to 282 yds.  Ironicly the longest was with a handgun, most are in the 180 -210 range.
I'm sure I can load some spitzer bullets to make the 35 Rem perform better, but making it a 35 Whelen will make it perform better too ;D .
I'll leave it alone until some of my other builds get done. Then I'll decide what to do with it.
I paid $325 - don't know if that is a bargain or not.  A friend picked up a very beat up 7600 in 30-06 for $180, a few months ago.
Yes, JES rebore made my 30-30 a 356 about a year ago.

The reason why PA is a socialist state is:
T/C frames and AR lowers can go in as a rifle but in order to get it returned to me it has to come out as a pistol.
Free states require name and address to sell a firearm to a dealer. PA requires DOB, SSN, DL #.  That the state police allegedly then file away.  In actuality I think they sell it to illegal immigrants so 1500 folks can walk around with my identity. (In Hazelton a judge is making easier for illegal immigrants to stay until they can assume my or your identity!!)
In PA you can't do a private sale with a handgun
In PA you have to have a waiting period to buy a handgun
In PA you can't hunt with a semi-auto.

Didn't you guys elect the chairman of the DNC as your governor?!?!

there is no waiting time to buy a handgun, you can use a semi auto shotgun for small game, but no semi auto rifles for hunting, you do have to transfer pistols but not rifles or shotguns a ccw is easy to get and you can own a machine gun. there is a lot of things wrong with the state, but compared to lot of other states(NY,maryland,NJ close to us we are in heaven. i can. have a rifle in a gun rack in my pick up truck and the police don,t stop me i can hunt year round and there is a lot of public land and hunting allowed privet land. there is not very much pay hunting like out west. there are better states but not meny. eastbank.

I don't know where "out west" pay hunting is.  I live in WY and have never paid to hunt.
CCP??  WY - None required - if you are allowed to own it you are allowed to carry it concealed.
Hunt with anything but a machine gun.  Most "big" game has a 24 cal or bigger restriction.
Machine guns and supressors are easy to get if you want to do the P/W and wait on the feds.
Private sales on any firearm except NFA stuff on a Form -4.
WY and MT have a law stating that if the firearm in made in WY (MT) and sold in WY (MT), then no 4473 is required.  The laws written requiring a 4473 are written under the interstate commerce clause. WY (MT) say that if it is made here and sold here there is no interstate commerce and the ATF has no authority trying to regulate it.

That's what I call Free America.

My apologies: PA did have a 3 day waiting period when I lived there in the early '90's

a few friends i have that went out west on bow and rifle hunts paid big time to hunt, mule deer, deer and elk.i think they used outfitters so it was all pay to hunt. one paid 3800.00 to bow hunt(he did get a very large racked buck) and other paid 4500.00 for a decent elk(got a nice one too).maybe its just the way it is with out of state hunters who don,t have the time to look for free huntable land. sorry did,nt mean to hijack this thread. eastbank.

Seems like if I recall correctly, that would have been about the last year that rifle was offered in 35 Rem (someone correct me if I'm mistaken).  If so, that just adds weight to the "keep it" argument.  -WSJ
