Coyote hunting
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:25:30 AM »
After deer season I'm planning to get into coyote hunting.  Got the 223, loading items and when the scope comes in I'll be at the range.  Also have a foxpro caller coming.

I've never hunted coyotes and have been doing a lot of reading to learn what I can.  Any one want to give out maybe your top 3-4 tips?

Be prepared to call in other animals like  Bobcat,  I've even called in an Owl.  (they can be big birds).

Preferences on calls?  Woods vs fields?  Hunting over dens?

Rarely find dens.  All my calls are 40 years old and are in the form of a  rabbit call.

I spend 30 to 40 minutes on a stand. All my calls are down loaded from wind river of varmit al's. Use rabbit in distress calls mostly. Used a fawn in distress last winter and had a pair of red tails circleing.
found it best to have a clearing or open fiels at my back if I'm out alone so they tend not to do a circle and come in behind.

I don't use any recorded calls.  All rabbit in distress.  As said, watch your back.  I brought in a Bobcat so fast on one stand, he put a scare into me.  Being still is the biggest factor I think.

My 2 favorite mouth calls are the Crit-R-Call 'Pee Wee', and the Burnham Brothers 'Mini-Blaster'. Both should be available at allpredatorcalls.com.

Scout ahead of time for thick cover likely to hold coyotes/predators, away from human activity. Get into position SILENTLY on the downwind side, sit rock still. Try to do your 1st tweet just as it's light enough to shoot. Keep hunting into daylight. Make new sets out of hearing of the 1st & keep trying. Just when you think nothing will happen, you are surprised. Watch a DVD or 2 from Randy Anderson or similar.

I have a Foxpro but often as not I like mouth calls.
