.244 krag?
« on: October 21, 2012, 06:03:44 PM »
Has anyone seen a Handi chambered in .244 Krag? or any rifle in this caliber for that matter? does it have a more common name? 6mm krag? .243 x 30-40? just bought a die set on a whim to try my hand at using a form die. any hints and suggestions using one would be great.

anyone? Perhaps this could be moved to the reloading section? I posted here because of the interest in oddball calibers in the handi. least expensive way to build a wildcat.

Not quite sure what stage you're in...

Never heard it described as such, but the Brits did much more with their. 303 since it served ~70yrs.  Probably a kissing cousin to the Canadian's 6-303 Epps.  For us yanks you could either run a 7x57r through a 6mmRem AI, or a 307Win through a 243 die.  Good luck.

A buddy has a 25 Krag, not in a Handi, but a custom built on a P14.  Fun to shoot, but he says making/forming the brass isn't much fun.

ok, craigster, i've seen the 25 krag. uses a .257 bullet. this is a .244. have not been able to find much info on this one. I have the form die the sizing die and seating die. I understand the form die is used to form cases from .30-40 krag cases. Just don't know how yet. I 've never done this operation, or even seen it done. I do not have a rifle to shoot them in anyway. but if this turns out to be not too difficult and a little fun maybe i will try to get a handi chambered for this round. Hoping someone on here has some advice for using the die and also perhaps someone has some experience with this round.

From John Donnelly's manual:

Make from 30-40 Krag. Anneal case and form in form die. Trim to length and chamfer. F/L size. Fireform case in chamber. There's also the 6mm Krag Short.

Good luck.
