52 gr BTHP in Hornet ??

Will 52 gr BTHP work in Hornet with 1-12 twist ?
I know the best way to find out is try it and see.
Unfortunately the only range I can use is 55 miles away.
@ $ 3.50 a gallon !
Long bullets in a slow twist at Hornet speeds probably won't make me happy.
Just asking if anybody has tried them.
I've got 900 bullets and wondering if it would be worthwhile
Working up a load or should I sell/trade for something shorter.
They were bought for a 223 so I don't know if they would expand at all at Hornet velocity.
thanks for any input

if we're talking standard .22 Hornet, you will not be happy. If we're talking absolute over the top barrel scorching max loads in a K-Hornet, yes they will barely stabilize.

Oh well.
Thanks Keith , I suspected that would be the answer
but was hoping I was wrong somehow.
Guess I'll have to go bullet shopping.
In general will accuracy be about the same with
30 , 40 and 45 gr or do I need to lean tword the
30-36 gr ?

I haven't played with the +50g bullets in my handi much. I have excellent results with the 35g V max, 46 G HP and 45 G Sierra Hornet bullets.
There was another post recie fly where guys recomended some of the bulk 22mag bullets like the 33g Remmy and 34g Winchester. I see bulk packs of the Winny in midway for good prices. Ladobe, says the remmy is long outta production.
But since you have the 52's already load up a doz and bring them next trip, who knows they just may shoot fine. I'll say this, in the big picture, it's not that long a bullet. I say its aeast worth trying.

Like CW said, try em, but I didn't have much luck with 52's
Mine has been rechambered to K-Hornet, but I still stick with 45's, both Nosler and Hornady. Try 2400 or 4227 with the 50 ish grain bullets, and the 40 something grain wt bullets.

My Hornet shoots 52 grain HP the best of all. A couple guys gave up on this rifle as it wouldn't shoot. %2's are the best with 50's a close second. 4227 powder

I would think that bullets up to 55 grains should stabilize with a 1-12" twist rate. I shoot 55 grain bullets in a 1-14" twist 223 with out a problem. I also have a 1 -14" twist K-Hornet and it will shoot 50 grain flat base spitzers very well. The proof is always in the shooting, some things just can not be predicted. If yjou do not want to take the risk, you can send them to me
, I have several guns that will shoot them fine!
Good Luck and Good Shooting
