BOOGERED UP A SCREW ON A FRESHLY BLUED GUN.
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:22:46 AM »
I learned how to rust blue a few weeks back.  I was re-assembling my gun when a screw froze up.  I boogered the head up removing it. Well I got it out but it was pretty mangled.  I tapped the metal in as much as I could cut a new slot and flat filed it.  It looks okay, but I lost the engraving on it.  I couldn't remove all of the damaged area because I was getting thin.  There is not replacement parts for this gun anywhere. It's an old 10ga double imported by Dana.  Pretty aggravated about this one.

If the thread is a standard one perhaps you can make your own replacement? Brownells sells blank screws that can be used to create almost any screw. I sure know how you feel!! I hate some jobs.. Had a friend with a '73 winchester (22 short) and the dust cover screw had 1/2 the head snapped off. He asked that I remove it so I drilled it out but the stress was rough.. A good drill press vise and a center drill, very sharp, got it started off well centered. All came out well in the end, no marks and the replacement left no evidence of any problem...
