my new ar is at home i have it sighted in with 55gr fmjs and i am wondering what would be a good bullet to use in it???

My favorite defense load for the 223 is a 60 grain partion. It gives good penetration even though fair heavy targets and expands well. It also works about the best for a hunting load so your ammo for defense is good for a shtf senerio too. I believe the FBI does or at least did load there 556 ammo with partitions.

depends , if you live where hand loads may be a problem then look to factory loads Hornady has TAP ammo that will work . I like remington hunting ammo. The corlock with a exposed lead tip is not to expensive and should work well. If inside a neighborhood maybe a fast expanding varmit bullet as it would expand in walls and "may" not go to harm others. If the gun is for critter control as well as pure defense then a long shot may be called for and a heavier bullet would be a good choice as long as twist rate was matched .
The bullet Lloyd offered is a good choice for a do all bullet with exception of over penitration in some cases. Maybe it is factory loaded by Federal ?

shootall has a point overpenetration might be a consern for some. I dont have kids at home or neihbors right next door and have been trained to be aware of colateral damage so penetration is something i look for not run from. Up here in the cold north an invader into your home in the winter is dressed about like an eskimo and i want a bullet thats gettting through all those clothes.
