I've been tweaking and fixing up my Mathews Q2. I bought it from a friend and he had a little mishap and cracked and chipped the grip. I used a hair dryer to remove the grip and was careful not to heat up the string.
Another friend who is a professional woodworker used some of his special bonding compounds or what not to repair the grip. Whatever he used to fill it with, he said was stronger than wood or glue. He sanded it down and refinished it. It looks like new!!!
Now there is some kind of black bonding material on the inside of the grip and on the bow. This is the "glue" that held this handle on. Does anyone happen to know what this black stuff is?
Do I need to put more black stuff on handle or can I push the handle on and heat the handle up and hope it with bond back together.
Any help is always appreciated!

If it were my bow I would try to remove all the leftover glue on the riser and the handle and then reapply new glue. I don't think what is left of the old stuff would be enough to hold it nor would I trust it.
It's a much safer step to clean it off and apply new glue.
Also, you might wanna stain the handle if your buddy sanded the finish off. The oils from your skin can discolor it. If it's oak it will turn black in time.

My friend did refinish the grip and I think applied a clear sealer. It looks like a new grip! He shoots as well and knows the use the grip will see. I think all grips would show some wear on the finish after years of repeated use especially if not cared for.
I removed all the glue. I found using brake cleaner on a cloth, immediately followed by a wet cloth removed the glue and not the camo finish. I used a 1'' wire brush to remove the glue in the grip channel.
I then applied 3M black weather strip adhesive to ''glue'' the grip back on. It seems to be working. I'm going to let it cure some more and see how it holds up. I did not want to use a glue or a cement type advesive. I think I can heat this up and remove the grip in the future if needed. Hopefully it will never need to come off.

Try some clear silicone caulking to secure it.This works great and holds well and it also is like a sound deadner .
