My friend did refinish the grip and I think applied a clear sealer. It looks like a new grip! He shoots as well and knows the use the grip will see. I think all grips would show some wear on the finish after years of repeated use especially if not cared for.
I removed all the glue. I found using brake cleaner on a cloth, immediately followed by a wet cloth removed the glue and not the camo finish. I used a 1'' wire brush to remove the glue in the grip channel.
I then applied 3M black weather strip adhesive to ''glue'' the grip back on. It seems to be working. I'm going to let it cure some more and see how it holds up. I did not want to use a glue or a cement type advesive. I think I can heat this up and remove the grip in the future if needed. Hopefully it will never need to come off.
