Topper 158 for deer hunting?

Dont know how to load pics but i have an old Topper 158 in 3030. I had peep sights put on it and the barrel parkerized. Thought it might makew a good rain gun. Anyone hunt deer with these ? How accurate are they, I plan to sight mine in tomorrow with 170 grain remington core locks. Thoughts appreciated.

I've got the same gun and it's a shooter with 150 and 170gr. Corelokts. The old Toppers are nice rifles and great for deer hunting. I've got the original open sights on mine and never scoped it so I don't really know what kind of group it'll shoot. It pretty much hits whatever I aim at so that's good enough for me. ;)

Just finishing some load development for an old topper barrel, but it's mounted on a modern SB2 frame.  ;)  I'm loading Sierra 150 gr. Gameking bullets over 29 gr. Reloader7 for a nice light kicking, but solid 200 yard load for mine.  ;)  I painted the front sight with fluorescent green nail polish, then went over that with phosphorescent paint as well as putting the paint in the white diamond on the rear sight.  End result is that in light I get a nice bright dot put above the white diamond and if it's dusky I have 2 glowing dots.  As long as the top dot is hovering right above the lower dot nearly touching, I have a guaranteed hit.  ;)

those will make an anytime gun, not
just for bad weather. i had one i let
a buddy talk me out of for his kid :'(
and we took a lot of venison with it.
wouldn't feel handicapped at all with
one.

I agree!

 This is exactly how I considered my first handis!!  (Rain guns)  They will quickly endear you and you will be like the rest of us... Your hi-dollar stuff stays in the safe!!  LOL

The 30-30 is a good one!!

I have a Topper 158 in 30/30. I took the gun to Tx. on a hog hunt last this past January .t was the only gun I took. When you travel across the country to hunt you take a reliable accurate rifle. So, you can see my like of it ,especially when I have over 50  rifle to choose from . My likes Federal blue box 170 ammo the best . Mine is topped with a 4x32  Swift scope and will do Inchish goups all day as long as I do my Part . It is however very inicky on forearm pressure , I always put mine on at 22inchlbs of screw pressure .   Pat

Well shot it today, deadly accurate on paper at 25 and 65 yards. Then set up a milk jug at about 150 and smoked it, guess UIll be hunting with the Topper!

Shot mine yesterday.  Disappointed; only 1.5" group at 50yds and vertical stringing.  I paid a whole $100 for this gun.  Should shoot better than this, even with a 12# trigger. ?!?

QUESTION...   Pop on forend so, not O-ring.  What do I do to fix if it's a forend fit/pressure problem?

Grab some fine emery cloth and a flat surface.  Take the two screws out of the metal frame fit piece and slowly, a stroke or two at a time and re-fit repeatedly so as not to get too loose.  I have used a file also to carefully remove a few thousandths.  ;)

My two "Topper" rifles. Handle so sweet. The bottom one is actually a Handygun II. I put it on a Survivor stock set. Saving the wood. The other is on an SB2 receiver and standard black synthetic. That one can shoot lights out.
