handi and berger vld hunting bullets
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:59:09 AM »
Was thinking of getting some of the 115 grain hunting bullets for my 25-06 was wondering if anyone has tried them in any handi caliber with any success. Seams the pointy nose helps them penetrate further before expansion and them blow up inside the animal sort of like the nosler bt. Thought that would be good for closer high speed shots from the 06 caliber

I haven't used them in a handi, but I shoot them in a couple bolt guns and  can say with certainty that I will never need to shoot anything else in those rifles.  The Bergers are a lot more accurate consistantly than any other bullet I tried in those rifles, one a 270 Win. and the other a heavy barrel 308. I killed a nice antelope in WY a couple weeks ago with the 308 from 370 yards, and he never took a step.

I've shot the 130gr 6.5mm VLD hunting in my 260 Rem Handi, hunted with it, but never saw a shootable deer.  :-\

I don't own a 30-06 Handi, but I load the 168gr Berger Hunting VLDs in my semi-custom Win M70 30-06. I found best accuracy at only 2600fps. It's best to follow Berger's loading guidelines to find the sweet spot. ;)

My friends found they needed to seat them to the lands to get best results. Maybe a LFC die could get the same results?

I've not shot them in handi either but I recently worked up a load with them in my 257wby which obviously I can't get the to the lands they are seated to factory length and shoot lights out on near max charge of powder.  Im pushing them at just over 3300 and my stock vnguard s2 will keep them in the .6s and .7s @ 100. Can't wait to try them on game.
Good luck
