Lube for REALs and Maxiball
« on: October 20, 2012, 03:31:39 PM »
Looking for a good lube for REAL and maxi-ball loads in my .50s inlines with 1in38 twist older CVA and T/C. My son and one of my friends will be using these to hunt deer with in Dec so could be 60 above to -10 out here in Nebr. Always used Hornady great plains in past but was traded these bullets unlubed. So I need a lube that isn't going to freeze nor be to guoy either? Thanks

You might want to get ahold of some Bullshop Nasa , or Sagebrush Alox lube. Both work well in blackpowder cartridges.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Try SPG, this is what I use for pan lubing bullets for BP loads.  ;)

DGL is supposedly almost identical.  Both made for BP.  ;)

beeswax/olive oil. Melt it together and mix it and then let dry.

What about the T/C  bore butter? I used it with success many years ago,370 gr. maxi ball. Sure they still make a similar product.Still have some I got marked down at WM.

Bore butter works , but if it gets to warm it runs all over the place.

Need to go to town today will see what I can find. There is a bee man there maybe get some bees wax, as I have olive oil. In fact I use olive oil on my patches with round ball. If no beeswax will look for premade lube not expecting much choose.

If you want to make your own beeswax lube, an old recipe from the 1800's calls for even amounts of beeswax and petroleum jelly (vaseline) more of the jelly in cold weather to keep it soft and more beeswax in hot to keep it from running.
A bit on the spendy side but to duplicate the original sharps bullet lube, mix bees wax and jojoba oil .

I use Gatofeo's lube for all my BP stuff nowadays.  This is from his stickie on the the Cap & Ball Revolver forum:

The recipe is:
1 part paraffin (I use canning paraffin, found in grocery stores)
1 part mutton tallow (sold by Dixie Gun Works)
1/2 part beeswax (available at hobby and hardware stores)

I like it better then any lube I've tried.   ;D
