Nikon Monarch 6x42 questions
« on: October 06, 2012, 04:26:16 PM »
A local pawn shop has a used Monarch 6x42 scope for sale; no box or papers. It's in excellent condition and their best price is $180 total.  I can't find any information on this scope. What's your opinion on the scope and the price? I'm considering it for a Remington  Model Seven in 7mm-08. Thanks for any replies.

I've got 2 Nikon and 2 Luepold scopes.  Nikon's are Prostaff.  Vari-x I & II on Leupold.  (And a drawer full of cheapies.)

I like the Nikon's better and the Monarch line is a step up on quality.  Like Leupold it has a lifetime warranty and good customer service.

That price is a decent price as long as the glass is good.

I will probably use it occasionally  for deer hunting in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mtns.  It might also be used for groundhogs and coyotes from time to time. I have other deer rifles and varminters I normally shoot.  I want to put a scope on the Model Seven that looks right and matches the caliber.

IMO the Nikon fixed scopes (4x & 6x) had an edge on clarity and brightness over their Leupold conterparts of that time. I've got a Leupold VX-III 6x42mm with the heavy duplex reticle on my 30-06. I have no problems hunting deer with it. If you get the scope, mount it so you're looking through the scope naturally when you shoulder the rifle like how a shotgun should mount naturally. Ring height is not just for scope clearance. ;)
Here's a link to some info on the scope.

Thanks for your replies. I traded for the scope and put it on my Model 7 in 7mm-08. I am very pleased with how it looks and performs. Thanks again.
