How long are the barrels currently? And what choke are they? Didn't you also want to be able to hunt with this coach gun?
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

they were 28" F/M chokes having a smith cut down to 20" and put a bigger bead
on it i do have a older Stevens (fox) 195? i think that i was going to cut down
but this is a nice old gun the the 311 was just a cheep used SxS in reel good shape \
so i will use the fox to turkey hunt with now i just need a newer dove gun
that i can run steel shot in

I always think everyone cuts down the barrels too much.
I like the 24 to 25 inch.  I think they swing better than the 18 to 20"
I think a gun smith would be your best bet for cutting the barrels down.
The shorter you go the higher the bead needs to be.

Awhile back I purchased this Stevens 311E with damaged F/M 28" barrels for $50.  Recently, a reloading buddy of mine cut the barrels down to 18 3/4" (18" is minimum legal length), soldered the barrel spacing and mounted a new bead.  I'm now wanting to put choke tubes in them but I don't know if that is possible.  It has turned out to be a real jewel to handle, shoot and transport.  It's now my go-to travel gun.  Pics don't lie!!!!!!

Any good smith should be able to install flush fitted choke tubes in that for ya.

choke tubes can be done if your barrels are thick enuf, i checked a few years ago on a gun and it was goin to cost more than the gun to git them put in.

I was looking at these reamers for doing choke installation.  Depending on what they want to do it, might be worth purchasing yourself.  ;)

A long time ago I got ahold of a 16 ga fox SxS with a bad barrel. To cut the bulge out it ended up being 22". I silver soldered the end and put the stock bead in the middle and got a bigger one for the end. It made a fine quail gun out to about 30 yards. Beyond that give em' both barrels, sometimes doubles and triples if you are quick enough when they flush.  ;D  It tracks pretty good and is a lot quicker to snap shoot with than my pumps and automatics.

thats  what i used,  just cuy them to 20in installed a big brass bead ,  and jb welded the hole between the  barrels that is left  from cuttin them,  i also , wire wheeled all the  finish that was  left on it.  and  mine  being made in the 40's  is all nickle steel, so its  got a antique  looking finish, i just clear  coated it in  clear  enamal , aand sort of baked it on  in  the oven  at 275 degrees . its  a hard clear antique  looking  finish, i used a mohogany  flat stain   left all the dings and nick's so it added to the look,

Another thing we do is polish the chambers so the hulls will shuck out with a quick jerk to the rear.
Brownells has the hones and oil for this and they are quite proud of their products, $$$.  I've done several SxS so the total cost per barrel is coming  down.
My pard did his with a small cylinder hone for lawn mower engines.
Both ways work.

Check the pattern after chopping the barrels and before adding choke tubes, At the average distances shot in CAS chokes are generally not needed or wanted.  Open bore at 7-10 yds is usually about 10-12" pattern or about the same size as the knockdown plates.
