The .45 Colt still lives... but the buck doesn't
« on: November 19, 2012, 03:15:30 PM »
My first handgun only kill.  I put one through his heart and both lungs.  Pretty neat to see a nickel size hole straight through the heart when you get to it.  hehe  Anyway, I hit him broadside, then as he ran I hit him in his left rear leg also with my follow-up.  He ran 30 yards and dropped on our fence line.   Best buck yet for me off my families 80 acre farm.  ;)  Unfortunately, pics were just with my camera phone, so not the best.  Should have taken the good camera along.  ;)

Nothing like taking one with a handgun, but better with open sights. Congrats to you.  :D

Less than 10 yards, but shooting backwards over my left shoulder kind of.  Load is a 240 gr. Sierra Sportsmaster with 10 gr. Unique.  Not really a heavy load, minimal kick and bark.  ;)

I used to shoot bucks like that, and still would if it weren't for our damn point restrictions here in Pa. !!!!   In my area that would be an illegal deer, must have at least three points on one side(not including the brow tine). I miss those days.

My handloads: 240 gr. Sierra Sportsmaster HP and 10 gr. Unique.  WW Case w/ CCI Large Pistol Primer.  Should be running about 1100 fps out of my blackhawk but haven't actually chronied this load.  ;)

Congrats, Awesome hunter, gun and deer.

I have a Ruger New Model Blackhawk convertible with 5 1/2" barrel in 45 Colt / 45 ACP. I carry it in the field, but never had a chance to make it sing on a deer.

That is what handgun hunting is all about.  I can feel the thrill you must have.  And not only did you do it with a .45Colt, you did it with a single-action without a scope.  On top of all that glory, you loaded the rounds yourself.  That, sir, will be the best eating deer of your life.
