Moose,

The big drill bits you use how do you keep them from chattering to heck and back?  some look like they are made up by you and the other looks toi be a MT5 extention sleve with another mt bit and no cutting oil hole in the bit right?  What speed do you drill at?  Sorry for all the questions I am new hobby lathe guy and I just didn't think it was possible!
Thx
Joe

Thank you Zulu, what I find amazing is how close my cannon is following the design of DD's Long Cecil with out even trying . Joe I run the 1-3/4 in drill at 110 RPM and the 2-1/16 in drill at 70 RPM , they are both HSS and seem to like that setup. The drills chatter a little starting out but stop when in the hole a bit . I use a little cutting oil from a oil can when needed. When I use good sharp drills and pay attention to starting the holes , they drill pretty straight .

My experience is that if they are sharp, the chatter will stop once the whole drill is in the hole.

The Whitworth is a older project that is set for a rebuild , so yes I will post final photos when done . After modifications , it should be ready for paint when the weather warms up next summer .
