44 mag Alaskan loads ?
« on: November 10, 2012, 08:03:29 AM »
Anyone have some good load data for a Ruger Alaskan in 44mag ?

I have a lot of 240gr JHPs  some IMR 4227 & blue dot.

I want to keep the load as light as possible ( under 1000 fps )

thanks : )

I have owned an alaskan 44 mag for about 4 years and still love the little gun. I have ran more 200 gr laser cast lead bullets from oregon trail down it's barrel than I care to count probably close to 5000 rounds . My most accurate go to load is 11 grs of unique with a 200 gr lead bullet, if I do my part my groups off sand bags at 25 yrds is about 2".  If you look this load up in Lyman load manual it is running about 1000 fps but from a short 2 1/2" barrel it's probably around 850 fps I've never shot it across a crony. I also shoot alot of 44 specials through my alaskan if you go this route make sure you clean the rings out of your cylinder before switching back to 44 mags. I don't have that much experience with the jacketed bullets but I know the 240 is probably the most comonly shot weight. Both the powders you mention are made for moderate hot loads Blue dot has been given a black eye for pistol shooters as of a couple years ago the cold weather was giveing it extreme spreads and high  preasure. Don't know if this helps, nice to see someone else owns the alaskan in 44 mag.

Iffin it was me, I'd try 20 grains of IMR4227 under those 240 gr pills using a LP primer. Lyman's staring load is 19.3 while Hornady's is 20.4.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

For the FPS you're looking for I second the motion for a dose of Unique. Accurate and not position sensitive. All the loads for my 45 LC's that are in the 1000 or so fps range are over Unique. I use Lilgun for the hotrod stuff. Your 44 mag will like Unique.

Thanks for the help guys.
I have run a lot of 240gr lead swc through the little gun using unique & trail boss with very good results.
and yes woods I do love that little alaskan, it has become my favorite hand cannon.

gonna try the 20gr of IMR 4227 ( thanks buck460XVR ) after looking around a bit it seems to be a good place to start with what I have on hand.
