Explain UP Buck hunting rules?
« on: November 14, 2012, 01:42:39 AM »
Havn't hunted the UP in about 4 years. Been trying to get one of those southern Michigan monsters I kept hearing about.
This will be my last year in that endevor so I'll be in the UP again in a year and I just am not sure about the 3 point rule thingy.

If you buy a single firearm buck license any buck with 3" antlers or larger is legal.

If you buy the combo license you then get one license for a buck with 3 or more points on one side and one license for 4 or more points on one side.  Those are the minimum qualifications - for example you could take two 12 pointers, or one 10 point and one 8 point, etc, etc.

And they do not have to be taken in order - in other words you can take a 10 point first and tag it with the restricted license (4 or more points on one side) and later shoot another buck with 3 or more points on one side.

The exception is that if you are in a QDM (quality deer management) area, you can only shoot a buck 3pts (on one side) or better no matter what license you buy.
