The man suspected of shooting at police from a 2000 Cadillac in two separate incidents appeared in court Tuesday to hear his bond set at $225,000.
Larry Gomez, 33, who was wounded and captured after a car chase and crash, appeared with his left arm bandaged from the tips of his fingers to his elbow, his face bruised and an eye swollen.
"That is too much money," his mother, Inez, said of the bond — $25,000 for aggravated motor vehicle theft and $200,000 for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer — following the hearing before Denver County Court Magistrate John Hoffman. "He did not attempt to kill no police officer."
Gomez is suspected of firing at officers during a traffic stop in Denver on Nov. 6 and during a similar stop by Westminster police the next day.
He was captured Friday after a chase that ended when his vehicle — a Dodge Stratus — collided with two Denver police cruisers near Interstate 225 and East Iliff Avenue about 7 p.m.
Gomez ran away, and police shot at him. He was struck by at least one bullet. He was arrested a few blocks away. Police have said Gomez may also have suffered injuries in the crash.
Members of his extended family attended the hearing, and as Gomez was led from the courtroom, he mouthed the words "I love you" to his mother and kissed his bandaged hand.
A number of girlfriends also attended the hearing.
"He's got a harem over here," Inez Gomez said, motioning toward the women outside the courtroom. "He doesn't beat them, he doesn't cuss at them." Her son is not a violent person and never shot at police, she said. His mother accused police of beating Gomez and shooting at him even though they knew he had been hurt in the crash.
