Feral Hog in Southern Illinois?????????
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:14:44 PM »
I took my son turkey hunting this morning as we were crossing the pasture something grunted, growled, woofed at us. Not a k9 sound or cat. After checking you tube I think it may have been a feral hog. Our farm is in Pomona near the Shawnee forest. Anyone else heard or seen any in SI.

I use to hunt down around Lusk Creek, heavy, in the 80s-90s.  Swore I saw hogs down by the river several times.  Before camera phones, think I had a disc camera on me!

Hear they may have swam over when the river was down.  Believe that over someone introducing them.

Yes there are ferals running around. They are not in great numbers yet but are growing. Up here along the Illinois river they are starting to pick up in number causing some crop land damage. So if you are ever out and come across some dont think twice.. just shoot

Just some info that Texas has learned, or not! If they are established, you will not    cannot not eliminate them with rifles alone!

Oh yes, they are starting to move in. In the last year or so there has been spottings of  hogs in the Knox Co. area out by the spoils. (coal strip mines)
Old people don't get mad, they just shoot you.

:)  Howdy! Soon you will have lots of hogs if the problem is not solved soon. 2 to 3 litters a year from each sow hog will create a problem like Texas has now. That is, you can't shoot enough of them to make a difference. I don't know what your state law is on feral hog control; however, if they are allowed to reproduce for a few years, they will be difficult to eradicate. Here in Texas the season is year round utilizing any legal method. Night hunts have become popular. Where there is a food and water source, you will find feral hogs.

I've always wanted to hunt feral hog, but I certainly don't want them here in Illinois.  I'm right along the Sangamon river - lots of good timber ground here, but I'd rather keep it for the deer.  If you guys see em, do me a favor and shoot em!
